Pet Products Review - Pedigree Super Bowl Commercial and 2-for-1 Coupons

Ok, who saw the Super Bowl?  That fourth quarter was simply amazing.  I was glued to my seat, focused on nothing but the Steelers.  But up until that point, what did I think was the highlight of the game? well it was Pedigree's commercial.  This was one of the best commercials I've seen in ages.  I thought it was simply hilarious the vingettes of what life would be if we had to choose a pet other than a dog.  Well if you didn't see it, here ya' go:

Now the very best part of this commercial is that it comes from Pedigree. Pedigree simply is one of the best pet food brands I can recommend.  Not only do they use the highest quality, its food my dog enjoys.  Also, when it comes to getting the message across that adoption is the way to go when considering a new pet for your home, nobody says that better than Pedigree.

Pedigree also knows, times are tough for everyone.  With that, they have a special coupon offer.  Go to their site www.pedigree.com/03adoption/superbowl to see all of the funny funny video shorts.  And go to http://www.pedigree.com/05Offers/Fetch%20coupons/Default.aspx to get buy one get one free coupons for Pedigree's new Butcher's Selects canned food for dogs.

Advocates of animal adoption will be glad to know that VP-elect Joe Biden plans to add to his litter - this time with a shelter dog.

Biden, who has been criticized for buying a German Shepherd puppy from a Pennsylvania breeder - notably a breeder who was later cited for several violations - now says he and his wife Jill are planning to get another dog, this time from a shelter.

Here's what he told George Stephanopoulos on the ABC Sunday morning news show "This Week With George Stephanopoulos":

"I've had German Shepherds since I was a kid and I've actually trained them and shown them in the past. So I wanted a German Shepherd, and we're going to get a pound dog, which my wife wants, who is hopefully a Golden [Retriever]."

Perhaps as a mea culpa to his many critics, Biden added that his family has always adopted animals in the past, including a cat. And he's glad that the Vice President's residence has a fenced yard with several acres so the new Biden dogs have plenty of room to play.

OK, we weren't among those who pounded on the new Veep just because he bought a dog from a breeder (we've done the same thing in the past). But it's good to know there will be two Biden dogs and that one of them will be adopted.

Lucky dog.

Pet Products Review - Meadowlands Horse and Pet Expo

As you may know, every weekend Champ my Sheltie and I escape to the country for a weekend drive.  This week New Jersey to attend the the annual Meadowlands Horse and Pet Expo.

What a pleasantly fun day! Our friend and daddy of two kitties Patty joined us.  Champ was very excited to attend this event as its an expo that allows both children and well behaved pets to attend; and this was a well attended event.

The Meadowlands pet Expo has something for every animal lover and pet enthusiast. At the show there were many educational and entertaining performances, special attractions, a petting zoo, pedigree dog shows, on-site pet adoptions and of course shopping!

I couldn't believe that they had in the expo building 2 full grown elephants and offered rides.  My personal favorite was the wolf den.  A cage where you can actually go in and pet and hug real life big, gorgeous wolves. Of course Champ was scared of the big not-bad wolves and wouldn't let me go in. My next favorite was the albino all white alligator.  There are only 30 known albino alligators in the world and the Pet Expo in New Jersey had one of them. Patty couldn't stop watching the frisbee tossing contests.

There were many breeds of dogs on location for the dog show.  We happened to be there right when the Siberian Huskies, Neapolitan Mastiff, Shih Tzu and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were being showcased. How interesting these shows are.

As for exhibitors, there were many local pet stores on hand and a few rescue organizations.  I was dissapointed that not many national pet product companies exhibited but those that did stood out.  Fresh Pet, Nature's Variety, PatriaPet, Dogswell, and American BioSciences had wonderful representation.  A pet Supply Stor called Care-A-Lot was at the show and had some of the best prices I've ever seen for very good quality pet products.  Go to their website www.CareALotPets.com for their eStore and catalogue.

The next show will be in Reading, PA on March 20-22, 2009.  Only thing is do check the schedule at www.horseandpetexpo.com because due to the popularity of this event, there are special hours when pets are allowed.  And take it from Champ, the noise level was very high, and at times both the noise and the crowds scared Champ a little. But do bring your pet, because there is a pet photo contest.

Pets Product Review - Dogsrule.com Open Letter to President-elect Obama

I love to shop and test out products.  But when it comes to dogs my opinion is different.  Rescue dogs, mutts, pound puppies whatever you call them are all regal creatures and worthy of a place in the White House.  After all, aren't we a nation of mutts?

Bravo to the great people at Pedigree for reminding us how special every dog with or without a pedigree is.  Here is their open letter to President-elect Obama:

If you're having a hard time reading the letter, go to www.dogsrule.com for a better view.  And remember, if you're considering adopting a dog, your local shelters have wonderful dogs of all kinds, thoroughbred predigreed dogs too.  Please support them.

It's not often that I see stray dogs running in my neighborhood, but around the world, it is often a larger problem than most of us can imagine.

The other day, my wife directed me to a photo she found on the San Francisco Chronicle's Web site, which points out the problems that occur when dogs go unneutered. It's a sweet picture actually, but the accompanying caption tells a bigger story.

In the photo, a black puppy is draped over the shoulder of a man who has just adopted him at an event in Bucharest. The puppy is all arms and ears, but his face has a contented look: He's going to his new home, where he'll be cared for and loved, sheltered and fed. No more wandering the streets eating scraps and dodging cars.

In Bucharest, the caption says, some 30,000 stray dogs roam the streets of the capital. On visits to Mexico, I have seen many dogs linger outside restaurants hoping for a morsel of bread or tortilla. They have no home, and so the problem of breeding goes unchecked. Unneutered dogs multiply.

I'm not sure how many dogs found loving homes in Bucharest, and I'm not sure what happened to those that were not adopted. But it clearly points out what can happen if dogs and cats are not neutered and spayed. Thankfully, our shelters in the U.S. don't allow dogs or cats to be adopted unless they've been neutered.

There are more photos of the Bucharest dogs on the Internet, many still waiting for someone to claim them. Hopefully, most of them did.
