Smokey is a black cocker spaniel and at the young age of 4, he has been rendered blind by cataracts. He could see again with surgery, but his family couldn't afford it and surrendered him to the McDonough County Animal Shelter in Macomb, Ill., in the hopes that someone would adopt him who could afford the veterinary procedure.
But nobody has stepped forward. The animal shelter has a minimum stay of 21 days for all animals and Smokey is out of time. He is safe for now, but if the shelter fills up, he is in danger of being euthanized.
The McDonough County Animal Shelter has called dozens of rescues, but none have the space for him or the funds to pay for his surgery. While funds exist to help individual owners with veterinary bills, there are not funds available for rescues to cover veterinary expenses.
The animal shelter estimates cataract surgery would be $2,000 to $3,000. While that sounds like a lot, if every one of my Twitter followers donated just $7 to the cause, the funds would be raised. That's the cost of a lunch out.
I know times are tight, but I'm writing this blog to gauge the support I could gather to help Smokey. If you could donate even just a little bit, post a comment on this blog. If enough of you comment, then I'll talk to my my local rescue about bringing Smokey here. Then you all can donate funds through the rescue, which is a non-profit.
