Caring for all creatures great and small seems to run in the Heigl family. While her sister Meg tends to tail waggers as a veterinarian, Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl has used her star power to draw attention to animal issues. Having been the proud parent to a plethora of pooches over the years--including Stella, Piper, Weezer the Schnoodle, a German Shepherd mix named Anderson, a mini-Schnauzer who answers to "Romeo" and Oscar, who was rescued from a garbage can-- the A-list actress will often pause to help a cause that improves the lives of dogs. In the following photo, the Emmy Award winner cuddles a canine at the third annual Pedigree adoption drive, which was held at a giant dog house in Times Square back in 2007.

Katherine Heigl recently found herself "in the dog house" to raise awareness for the third annual PEDIGREE Adoption Drive. Heigl held court inside a giant dog house in Times Square to kick off the educational and fundraising campaign that focuses on finding dogs loving homes. In just one week, the program has raised more than $1.5 million dollars for the American Humane Association. (PRNewsFoto/Masterfoods USA,Jamie McCarthy)

Kyle MacLachlan may be famous for his roles in Twin Peaks, Sex and The City and Desperate Housewives, but on the web it's the actor's canine companions who lap up the limelight. The thespian's two tail waggers-- a 9-year-old Jack Russell Terrier and a 6-year-old Yorkshire Terrier/Chihuahua-- are the stars of The Adventures of Mookie and Sam, a website which offers a glimpse into the lives of the pair of "pup"arazzi magnets.

Mookie (seen at a 2003 charity event in the photos below) and her sibling Sam, who have a number of fans on Facebook, are also YouTube sensations, with clips covering their summer vacations and holiday happenings.

Grey's Anatomy star T.R. Knight may have recently stepped in front of the camera on location in an L.A. church to film a scene for the popular doc drama, but behind the scenes the actor's two dogs-- Arrow and Ebony-- were the stars of the show.

One of Knight's cuddly canine companions came into the actor's life courtesy of his co-star and pal, Katherine Heigl. A noted dog devotee, the Emmy-winning actress adopted a lovable Lab for her friend's 2007 birthday from Hearts United for Animals, a national no-kill shelter in Nebraska which, according to a report from the Journal Star, often receives donations from the blonde beauty in support of the organizations "sanctuary sweethearts,"-- animals deemed unadoptable due to medical needs, age or personality issues who have found their forever home at the shelter.

After months of anticipation, it's time for the padded paws of the presidential puppy to promenade through the halls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. A Portuguese Water Dog with a political pedigree, as one of his 10 siblings-- now known as Cappy-- is the newest pet of Senator Edward Kennedy, the nation's new First Fido comes from Amigo Portuguese Water Dogs in Boyd, Texas, the Examiner reports.

Only 6 months old,the cuddly canine has already had three names. Born on October 9, 2008, the pup was registered by his breeders as Amigo's New Hope. Christened "Charlie" by his first owners, the darling dog now answers to the name "Bo," a moniker with ties to the Obama family, as young Sasha and Malia's cousin has a feline fur baby with the name, and "Diddley" was the sobriquet of Michelle Obama's father.
