Dog lovers buy a wide variety of prescription medications, fatty acids and digestive supplements, special shampoos, and topicals that may help offer their dogs symptomatic relief. But before they load up on these products maybe they should consider whether the root cause of the dog's discomfort might be due to the food he is eating.
A surprising number of dogs have adverse reactions to the ingredients commonly found in dog food. These reactions vary, but most often include smelly ears, itchy skin and/or loose stools. These reactions are sometimes seen with soy, beef, and corn, but can also be triggered by chicken and wheat, which are found in a majority of supermarket brands. In addition, conventional dog foods often add chemicals that are known to cause adverse reactions in dogs, including BHA, BHT and sodium nitrite, (chemical preservatives), propylene glycol, food dyes and MSG. These chemicals can be avoided by choosing an all natural healthy brand.
If your dog does have allergies to ingredients like wheat or chicken it doesn't make a food with these ingredients a bad food, it just doesn't fit your dog. It's best to rotate the formulas so your dog doesn't develope allergies to the same ingredients. I rotate with chicken, lamb and fish formulas. I also add cod liver oil or coconut oil and half a capsule of the Pop-A-Green, a whole food multi, to my dogs food.
No one food is best for all dogs but if you do your homework you can find a fit for your dog.
I use and recommend Flint River Ranch a natural healthy dog food.
