If your dog has hemangiosarcoma, leukemia, or any type of bleeding tumor, you’ll want to know about Yunnan Baiyao (aka Yunnan Paiyao), a Chinese herb that stops bleeding.

Yunnan Baiyao has been used in Asia for more than one hundred years and is considered a miracle drug for wounds and hemorrhage. It first gained recognition by western practitioners during the Vietnam War. The Vietcong carried it with them and took it if they were wounded to stop bleeding and recover more quickly.

It is now recognized as an effective remedy for reducing clotting time by as much as 55%.

The powder form is most appropriate for external applications such as those seen in dogs with skin cancer and mast cell tumors. It is also available in capsule form for internal consumption. Dogs who can expect to benefit the most from this formulation are those with hemangiosarcoma, heart based tumors, liver tumors, mast cell tumors, any bleeding nasal tumor, and some types of melanomas.

Please be cautioned when purchasing this herb. While it’s considered an herbal remedy, some formulations contain ox bile. Ox bile is not something you should give to your dog, so check with the manufacturer to be certain that this is not an ingredient.

Yunnan Baiyao also dramatically reduces recovery time after surgery and can aid in quicker recovery times for dogs who have surgery. It is recommended that it be given to the dog on the day of surgery, and for the following week. During this time, refrain from giving your dog any supplements which may act as anti-coagulants, such as Omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin E, garlic, turmeric, and ginger.

It’s also effective for reducing hemorrhagic pericardial effusion (fluid build-up around the heart) which is commonly seen in dogs with hemangiosarcoma.

The recommended dosage is based on weight. For dogs weighing 11 – 20 lbs., they should be given one 250 mg. capsule every 24 hours. For dogs weighing 21 – 80 lbs., one capsule every 12 hours, and for dogs over 90 lbs., 2 every 12 hours.

This treatment should be used as first aid only and not administered for a prolonged period of time.
