Pit Bull mix Batgirl Its been almost seven years since Batgirl was plucked, scared and alone, from the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina. Since that time, shes been living at the Best Friends Animal Societys satellite location in Tylertown, Mississippi. Shes playful, clearly adorable, and gets along well with other dogs. But for some reason, she seemed destined to be overlooked by potential adopters. Staff wondered if shed ever find a family of her own.
Michelle, an Indiana resident, happened...

Inseparable Pit Bulls There have been so many heartbreaking (or heartwarming, depending on your perspective) accounts in recent months of dogs loyalty to an injured or even deceased companion, I almost didnt click on this one. Seeing Pit Bulls in the headline, however, I succumbed.
The tragic report from Phoenix, Arizona: A female Pit was struck by a car and lay fatally wounded on the side of the road. Her male traveling mate refused to leave her side. For 14 hours he lay there and nuzzled...

Nick B and rescued Afghan dog, Bodhi Army Sergeant Nick B. took unusual action against cruelty he witnessed serving in Afghanistan. When he encountered a tied-up, skinny Shepherd mix covered in mud, ears and tail hacked away, Nick asked the people living nearby if he could have him. But the owners, who were planning to use the dog for gruesome "entertainment" purposes, were only willing to give him up in return for cigarettes. The soldier happily traded.
Nick won the dogs trust by...
Are no-kill proponents out of touch? Or shelters lazy?

For starters: Im not against the no kill movement. I'm certainly not pro-kill. If theres any confusion as to whether I think taking the life of a living, breathing animal is an ok solution, simply because theres no place to put him, let me be clear. I abhor it. Its just that I hate acute, unrelenting suffering even more.
Two weeks ago I posted an editorial recounting a conversation with a visitor to the shelter where I volunteer. The woman wanted to know why we didnt send our excess animals...

Pit Bull Lilly in recovery at Angell's Veterinary Hospital. In the dark morning hours of May 3, a freight engineer quickly hit the brakes when he noticed a dog dragging a human out of the way of his oncoming train. That human, Christine Spain, had passed out on the way home from a friend's house. Had her Pit Bull Lilly not been with her, she would be dead.
Though Lilly managed to pull her owner from the path of the speeding freighter, it couldn't be slowed in time for the dog to avoid...

What a cool toy! Is it a ball? Is it a frisbee? No, it's a Zingfling Trio. To me it looks like a cross between a frisbee and 3 balls.
Made from 100% ballistic nylon this toy has 3 rubber balls inside. It is a very versatile toy that provides hours of entertainment.
It can be used to play several different games with your dog. You can toss it through the air for an awesome game of fetch, or if you have a dog that prefers tug-of-war, it works great for that as well.
In my...

The ZingflingDuois the perfect toy for Pippen! It is an incredible toy for fetching and tugging which Pippen loves. Just be careful, as once your dog gets started with it, he may not want to stop!
We love the durability of the ZingflingDuo. So many toys of Pippens fall apart in a matter of days, but this product appears that it may even outlast his entire puppy stage - one can only hope! No matter how much we zing or fling, it shows no signs of wear and tear....
Shelter confrontation: uncomfortable questions, answers

Scenes from a shelter: a Basset Hound checks me out Id just finished taking Chessie for a walk (and was doing the dance that is exiting the kennel without letting the other resident pup slip out) when an unfamiliar woman approached me. She had two young boys at her side, a baby in her arms, and she asked, unhesitatingly:
Do you kill dogs that arent adopted?
Her bluntness caught me off guard. Im a volunteer, and I wasnt exactly sure how the staff would want me to answer.
Unfortunately, we get...

Next time you are at the store pick up a bag of dog treats and look at the ingredient label. Chances are there is a long list of ingredients, most of which you have no clue what they are. How can this possibly be healthy for your dog?
Purebites eliminates all the extras and makes their treats with between one and three pure, natural ingredients. I feel much better about giving something like this to my furry companions.
I gave a bag of the new Turkey Breast Purebites...
