One Philadelphia company feels the same way. According to Philadelphia’s Recycling Zychal, discarded city umbrellas are repurposed and fashioned into rain hoods, dog raincoats and cat toys filled with organic catnip. The dog coats are custom ordered after a client informs them of the umbrella choice and dog’s size. People are invited to donate broken umbrellas and Recycling Zychal will donate to an animal refuge for each “brolly” they receive.

Their website states, “Everything you see on the site is made with broken umbrellas and is handmade by me, Taryn Zychal, in lovely Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Our most popular product, the Upcycled Umbrella Dog Rain Coat and Winter Dog Coat keep your pets dry on the outside and with your choice of Eco-Fi felt lining or a vintage lining, keep your pooch looking fresh and staying dry on the inside. We also offer HOODs for women, which are modern day babushkas, and Organic Cat Nip filled Kitty Toys that will make your kitty go nuts!”
