Having your pet spayed or castrated is indisputably beneficial to your pet as it can control pet populations and help prevent disease. However, studies have shown that within 48 hours of surgery, appetite can increase and metabolism can slow in cats. This can ultimately lead to weight gain and diseases such as arthritis, diabetes and urinary tract problems.

This highlights the importance of nutritional changes and exercise modification following neutering. Talk to your veterinarian about the appropriate diet and exercise regime for your pet.

"Having your pet .... castrated is indispuably beneficial to your pet." We'll, I'd beg to differ. I don't think the issue has been resolved at all. I would cite Dr. Charles Hjerpe, DMV, the head of the School of Veterinary of U.C. Davis as to the benefits and very real drawbacks of castration, particularly early castration. As one sensitive to animal rights as well as social engineering, I can't but help believe that the spay neutering issue is overhyped despite the laudable goal of population control.

Were about to take the manhood from our 10 year old chow mix we just rescued. Does anyone know if he will gain weight? He is very slender now.

I had my female dachshund castrated and yes she has gained weight despite the fact i try and curb her eating . I only feed my two dachshunds EVA which does not have any cereal in it. I highly recommend this dry food . It also comes in canned food. Of course dogs prefer foods that have a smell to it . What I do is to add a little broth to the dry food and spoil the dogs once a wek with a lamb's neck which they love to chew or cooked chicken livers which i add tot he dry food.

"I had my female dachshund castrated"____...another first.____My female dachshund is spayed. No weight gain. We watch how much she eats and she gets lots of exercise. No problem.____Same with every other neutered dog we've ever had.____If you have a fat neutered dog - it's your fault.
