The good news... It is NOT Dominance!

The EVEN BETTER NEWS...

IT'S SEX!

That's RIGHT.   Humping (despite the obvious implications -that it probably feels good) is S. E. X.

Sex!  Sex!  Sex!  Sex!  Did you know that dogs, like most creatures, need to have sex to reproduce?

Reproduction is just one of those things that pops out in play.  Play-time is just a rehearsal stage for all of life's survival skills.

During play-time your dog will:

  1. Play-fight
  2. Play-hunt
  3. Play-kill
  4. Play-mate

MARCH 3, 2009, 11:24 AM Hi Kelley: Reading your post makes me want to ask a question about our 13-year-old female Dachshund. Every night, when my wife and I are in bed, she humps our legs. Not just once, but several times. She doesn't do it at any other time. Can you explain?---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I can't explain. Furthermore, any trainer that give you a definitive "this is why..." would be full of bull. There are many, many reasons why this could be your dogs pattern of behavior. That is NOT to say that I don't enjoy hazarding guesses. I live for forming theories :) I don't get to scientifically test many of them, so I want to be clear -THIS IS JUST A THEORY. Now if you asked me to CHANGE your dog's behavior... that would be a whole different thing. The nice thing about being about behavior is you don't need to know WHY something is happening to alter the frequency or location in which it occurs. MY THEORY: At some point in her life she was super excited/playful/stimulated when you all got in bed and the humping kind of just popped out -a little fragment of survival in her playfulness. I am also guessing that it got a HUGE response. Maybe laughter, shock, disgust, but some kind of response that made the behavior continue or increase in frequency until it became a pattern.
