For the Love of Oliver Oggero
Hi my name is Summer, I am 11 years old and this is my story.
On Friday, January 2nd, 2009, my beloved Teacup Poodle Oliver Oggero died.
It all started when we took him into PetSmart at about 2:30 p.m to get him groomed, a lady took him and told me and my family to come back at 7:00. I didn't want to leave him that long but my mother Laura reassured me they were "PROFESSIONALS", we left Oliver and went out to eat.... About 3 hours later they called back and told my mom that Oliver wasn't acting right, so we rushed over.
When we got to the Grooming section of PetSmart I took Oliver and cried my eyes out, the lady who worked there said that everything would be okay, and to drive him right home. She said he was just tired, but I could tell something was wrong because normally he licks my face all over. When we got to the car I told my mom to take him to the vet immediatley because he was not breathing right and he wasn't moving. The first vets office was closed so we took him to the animal hospital on Sterling.
When we took him in, the Doctors said something was seriously wrong. They told us that his gums were pure white, he was missing a tooth, and his lungs were being filled with a bloody fluid, so he couldn't breath. There had been some kind of trama to the chest that had happened within the last few hours, so they took a long tube to help him breath and cough up the blood. I coudn't stand the fact that my little doggy was in pain so I just sat there crying over my cousin, Willie's shoulder.
After we were at the hospital for about an Hour and a Half I went home with my father, Victor. When I finally arrived at my dad's house he got a call from the vet saying that Oliver passed away. We were just getting out of the car when we got the call. So my dad had everyone go inside except me, he sat on the grass and held me. He didnt even have to tell me my dear dog was dead. I cried so much, and so did everyone else.
Apparantley the groomers at PetSmart hurt Oliver's 4 month old body internally, and he was either dropped on the side of the tub or had fallen off the grooming counters or had been squeezed too tight. Oliver died at 7:56 p.m. and I will never forget that.
Oliver died for a reason, and the reason was to help all of the other people pets, I learned very important things from him. I think Oliver knew it was his time to leave because before he went into the Emergency Room he gave me a kiss on my face like he did every day.
I am an 11 year old animal activist, My name is Summer, I hope you tell your people my story and I hope you tell me any of your animal stories so we can all make a difference.

Ironic isn't it that Petsmart works so hard to keep animal activists off their back and yet they end up creating what they fear most...they spend a lot of money on grants to charities and give up store space for adoption and yet we consistently hear horror stories like Olivers'.Perhaps if they paid a decent wage and invested in proper training then such tragedies could be avoided, but then that is corporate America for you...their dog training is so incredibly bogus that I know of one owner who had her dog taken to the kill shelter after being frustrated with Petsmart trainers.
I cried when I read Olivers' story, thank you so very much for sharing it.

Like a dummy, and being a peacemaker , i let them.... I quietly kept my peace and wept in silence, but i still mourn my sweet little shih tzu to this very day!! He was the sweetest little companion who helped me thru my divorce and time away from my children with my worrisome ex.... OMG...please please dont let them get away with this yet again.

MY heart goes out to you all. I recently adopted a toy poodle and was thinking about taking her to Petsmart to have her groomed. Now that I have read your stories I will rethink my decision. Give em hell. Make them pay.

Dear Summer, I am sorry for your loss and I realize that at your age, you may not have had any choice in where you took your dog for grooming, but if you really want to look at Olivers death as meaningful, then learn that the sad, very real facts of life are 1. you get what you pay for. 2. If you really want something right you have to be willing to learn and do the work yourself.
It is no surprise to me that one of the cheapest places to get your dog groomed has untrained, idiots doing a cruel job of grooming pets. As a general rule lots of dogs don't like baths. They struggle. I can imagine that people who over-worked, underpaid and not all the smart to begin with, take this out on the animals. Its not fair, its not right, but its what happens. Please don't just not support grooming at Pet Smart, boycott Pet Smart and all they sell. Visit your local shelter and ADOPT!

I have heard stories like this time and time again! These so called groomers are trained by petsmart,The owners need to be more responsible in caring for their pets.I have a toy poodle and I will not just take her anywhere because it is my job to protect her.Just because someone works in petsmart, does not mean they will care for your pet properly. As far as being overworked and underpaid goes, they accepted the job at those conditions.I will not make excuses for these ignorant people. I am appalled and upset of how these people lack compassion and common sense.I will not shop Petsmart or Petco,All pet owners need to do the same, there are many small pet boutiques where they can get what they need, and for goodness sakes, find a reputable groomer.Ask your vet, but,be careful and choosy. Please don't base your decision on the price. If thats an issue, then you should have not purchased a high maintanence pet.Rememeber, going to a strange place is stressful enough without being abused.OMG,I am livid.....

I have heard over the years of issues with Petsmart, but never really paid much attention to them. After reading of so many personal accounts of mistreatment and accidents, I am appalled and will definetly start paying closer to the stories that I hear. I am sorry for your loss and I applaud your actions as an animal activist. Be strong!

We've never taken our dogs to Petsmart for grooming but as I was walking into the store to purchase dog food, a girl was leading her poodle to the car. She was visibly upset and I asked if I could help. She told me she had just moved to Cincinnati and believing the Petsmart ads for grooming, she dropped off her dog. Not only was the grooming job bad (they shaved the poodle), but she said the dog was feisty and just wanted out of there. She didn't know what had happened but was never going back. One of my relatives took her Lab to P/S for grooming and when they got home, the dog laid in the corner like some one had hurt her. We think she was slapped.
I took my Cocker to P/S dog school - what a waste of time and money - now I steer clear of Petsmart.

Anonymous...I hope your find the following links helpful in this case. What is disburbing is that the grooming manager was perfectly willing to blame the incident on another customer's dog, possibly subjecting it to euthanization. She shouldn't be allowed to work in the petcare sector again!

I have a Yorkie named Gracie Rayne
Jones she is my baby, she acts
like a human. She meets me at the door when I get home from work ,
Boy does she give me kisses, she's a wonderful companion, there's so much this little angle
has done for my life. If anyone
would hurt her in care of a place,
that specializes in animal care. I
would not let this place have a minute of peace.
Summer I am sorry for your loss
and I hope you and your parents
don't give up. Animals and children
need all, to understand if we don't
speak for them on Abuse, laws want change to protect them from
the idiots in this world.
I know you can't replace "Oliver"
but I do hope you have gotten another Angle to help you to move on. Margaret Jones, Tulsa,Ok.

I wish I knew this before... I live in Vancouver, B.C. and 3 weeks ago I took (stupidly enough) my 14 weeks old Pomeranian to Petsmart for a "nice grooming session". I asked them to be careful with him since it was his first and I reminded them how frail poms are. My puppy never had a health problem before and had recently his second health check before leaving the breeder's kennel. He was a sound happy puppy. The primary reason I took him there was to have his nails clipped since I have no experience at that and was a bit nervous to do so. I paid for the bath, trim and nail clipping package. I told them I only wanted his rump clipped and his paws. Two hours later, he had the worse "haircut" ever. They cut the hair all around his ears making him look like a wannabe-doberman and apparently they just splashed him with lotion and made him smell like powder for a day. They didn't expressed his anal glands, brushed his coat or clipped his nails. At the time I was just happy to take him home. Since then, my puppy has been coughing sporadically. I took him to the vet and 500 dollars later (in tests) it appears that someone hurt his throat and now he will be having an increasing problem of collapsed throat for life. We have never used a collar on him and never had been unsupervised or left anywhere else. So... Thank you Petsmart for hurting my dog for life!

My heart is aching for you, Summer, as well as for the others whose dogs have suffered or died. I trained many years ago at a reputable grooming school, and we were taught to handle dogs with care and attention to their mental and physical comfort at all times. To anyone thinking of taking their dog to a groomer, please be aware that there is NO regulation of groomers. You must check everything out yourself. Check with the Better Business Bureau for any complaints about the groomer. Ask where the groomer studied, then check out the reputation of the school. Ask for clients' recommendations. Ask if you can watch her groom a dog or two. She might not want you to watch your own dog, because dogs do have a tendency to act up more if "mommy" is there to rescue them. Ask if she uses drying cages or high-speed dryers. The former can be a killer! The latter can panic some dogs, especially small ones. A good groomer combs out or at least supervises a dog WHILE it's drying in the same room.
Ask if she uses tranquilizers (only vets should prescribe or use these), if she is used to handling young, small, frail, or elderly dogs, how she restrains a dog that is uncooperative, whether she applies flea/tick products and what they are, and whatever else you might think of that could affect your dog. When you get your pet back, it should be happy to see you, and probably relieved to be going home, but should not be panicky or dazed Check for cuts, burns, painful areas. Please, dog (and cat) owners, do your homework and be as careful about groomers as you would be if you were leaving your child in someone's care. There are many good, dedicated, groomers, but you must look for them. Be aware that they probably are booked weeks in advance. Be willing to spend more money for a good groomer. Don't risk your pet's wellbeing in order to save a few dollars.

I'm so sorry about your experience and loss due to PetSmart. There have been many times I have been tempted to have my 6 lb Maltese, Sassy, groomed there but I just couldn't do it after walking in acouple of times and hearing conversations and seeing actions of the groomers. For those of you who have basically "attacked" this young lady and her experience....SHAME ON YOU.....it appears to me you don't belong on any blog at all unless you are going to have compassion and not have the need to "vent" out your own frustration from whatever.....GROW UP and be supportive....even better yet, get a life.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss,Summer.
I,too, had the horrible experience of my Collie being injured at our local PetSmart. I actually witnessed my beloved dog strike her chest+fall to the floor as a grooming "tech" wanted her to jump up on a table that was not lowered all the way to the floor!
My girl did not act right after the incident+the next day + took her to the vet.
After contacting Petsmart corp. via email, the grooming salon manager called me. By that time my girl was in ICU at a specialty hospital. I had to make the painful decision to have my beloved Collie euthanized a little more than a week later.
The store manager was in touch with me+relayed medical forms her corporate office wanted. Never once did anyone from corporate ever call or write to me!!!!!!
In all my grief, I wasn't thinking straight+settled for 1/2 the amount of the medical bills I incurred-what a dope on my part in hindsight!
My regular groomer told me that the manager gets a kick back from corporate on any unclaimed settlement I do not get awarded.
I would never advise any one else to use that particular salon. I had just stopped there on a whim to get her nails trimmed.....sigh.
I do like the selection of products tho, as they have more to offer than Petco.
As far as boycotting the place, I don't have any other options, really, other than buying on the net.
