After yesterday's post about moving a dog to Tokyo from Orlando, in which a pet owner was having trouble finding an airline to take her "Puggle," one of our Twitter followers, @maxandcats, asked "Why United would not fly the dog because it was part pug?"

Great question!  Is United just discriminatory?  Anti "designer dog?"

This blog is excellent, but I woud like to add a comment. The pug owner did not say the pug was flying in the cabin, so I think we can assume the dog was flying cargo. So the owner just ran into the heat embargo. The baggage or cargo area of an airplane are temperature controlled, but the tarmac is not! The air temperature in Phoenix is often 120 degrees F., which means the tarmac is even hotter. Any delay in baggage handling -- which is typical -- and a pet in baggage can very quickly be in extreme distress. So a heat embargo has been institured, wherein live animals will not be shipped during the hottest months of the year. The embargo runs from June 1 to September 1 for most airlines, though Delta has extended that from May 15 to September 15. The areas effected are usually Las Vegas, Nevada, and all cities in Alabama, Arkansas. Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. There are also a number of foreign cities and countries affected by heat embargos, such as Beijing, Taipei, Seoul, and Tokyo, so anyone shipping animals to other countries should check with the airlines on this matter.
