Below is a letter to the IPATA organization reminding them of the importance of serial numbers on the EU veterinary certificate (form 998). This is commonly overlooked by veterinarians and USDA officials, so it is the responsibility of the pet owner (or their pet relocation company!) to ensure that it is filled in. We thought it'd be useful for our readers to remind them about the importance of the serial number (emphasis ours):

I am traveling with my pet from India to Seattle via Amsterdam using KLM. There is a layover at the airport for 4 hours at Amsterdam. Will I need a microchip or a blood titre test for the layover? Thanks.
A valid concern: when traveling with pets internationally, what do you need for layovers in different countries?
My family with our cat moved to the Netherlands in late July 2007 from California. Just before the move our cat received a three-year rabies shot as well as the 10 day prior to departure check up. We are now moving back to California at the end of June. Will my cat need another rabies shot or will the one she received in the US prior to leaving still be working? Thanks Bob
