Pet Products Review - Hill's Prescription Diet i/d Canine

Well my dog Champ is very sick.  He has a number of complications and we're heading to the specialist this morning.  Unfortunately it seems that he may have a neurological issue.  This scares me.

One of the side affects from his ailment is that he's incredibly dizzy and as a result started to vomit accutely.  Poor pup, he had nothing left in his stomach and that made the matter worse.  So aside from the neurological issues, I asked my vet what is the best food for your dog when they vomit.  She recommended Hill's Prescription Diet i/d Canine.

Hill's Prescription Diet i/d Canine

The Hill's Prescription Diet i/d Canine is specially formulated for a diet that won't aggrevate a pup with gastrointestinal diseases.  I guess you can say its like white rice with a bit of chicken but in a can an perfectly balanced for a dog.

You can find this Hill's product on nearly every online retailer.  Southern Agriculture has it on sale at: http://www.southernagriculture.com/southag/product.asp?dept_id=226&pf_id=PAAAAAOEIHGHLJAP&ad_id=froogle&key_id=37515_HillsPrescriptionDietDogIDFoodCan

Funny, I went to the pet store today to specifically ask for this product. The pet store owner said she didn't carry the Hill's brand because its all grain fill and not good for dogs. Well Secret Shopper, first she's not a vet, and she only carries super expensive premium brands. Besides that, she's not the nicest person. I walked out and went to the vet down the street to buy what you recommend. My pup has a sensitive tummy and needs the Prescription Diet i/d.

We had our Iggy on Prescription i/d because he had gihardia. It is sold at Petsmart and at the vets. A prescription is needed to but it as we were told many times. Now, we make our food. I am still looking for recipes. Gotta read those labels. They hide many things. We use cooked brown rice, cooked carrots, chicken breast, green beans, zuchinni, parsley, buffalo, oatmeal, barley, a bit of sea salt. It is all cooked and put in a food processor and then packed in freezer bags (when I make a bunch) our Iggy loves it. I make treats by taking all natural chicken breasts and bake them, then pull the pieces apart into little pieces and bake em till they are crunchy. They are healthy:) You can freeze them too:) We did feed our dog Innova and Merrick brands at one time. They are a couple of the top ten dog foods. Good luck with your little puppy. What kind of dog do you have?

Has anyone have cannes of Hills Prescription ID that when they opened have a large portion of food missing, a hole in the middle of the food? I have had 12 cans with this and my dog seems to be getting diarrhea - a little concerned here. Thanks, Cheryl

yes, i had this as well when I opened the tins. I think it is because the food is so dry and compact in this tins. My dog loves the hard food of Hills I/D, she doesn't eat the tin food. We have 4 dogs and they all love this food, even though the older Kerry Blue never eat hard food before. I can only say that the Hills I/D has taken a big burden off my shoulder as I had my dog in hospital to find out what is wrong and they thought at first it would be cancer. They put my dog on Z/D for 3 months and after this on I/D. Sorry for any mistakes, I am German

My maltese male 9.5 y.o. has been on Precriptive Diet Dry Food for over one year and I will say that he has not been better! Problems with diarrhea have been eliminated and he has so much energy. This has been the best food for him in all his years. I mix the food with a small amount of green beans. Could not be more pleased with this product. It works!

Susan Thixton of Tampa, Fla., mans a Web site (www.truthaboutpetfood.com) that gives nutritional values for more than 1,000 kinds of pet foods and treats for cats and dogs. Ms. Thixton started investigating pet foods after her own dog perished from cancer that her vet told her was connected to the pet food preservative ethoxyquin. It is still an allowable pet food preservative and commonly used in foods and treats, says Ms. Thixton. Read more: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09224/990125-51.stm?cmpid=lifestyle.xml#ixzz0NzhrgwRb

If any of you are taking your pets to a vet who recommends ANY Science Diet food - I recommend looking for a new Holistic Vet. Regular vets have minimal, if any, real training in canine nutrition - the only certification course that I've heard of is through Hills Science Diet. Hmmmm, funny that their food is what all the vets are selling and recommending (and making lots of money from). I agree with the poster who suggested www.dogfoodanalysis.com. Please - if you really want to make a difference in the health of your pets - read "Food Pets Die For" by Ann Martin and learn how to read and UNDERSTAND pet food labels. You could be saving your pets life!
