Nutro Cat Food Recall

The following alert was sent to me by Michael Ayalon of PuppyPappers.com.  The following is his announcement regarding Nutro Cat Food:

Nutro pet foods is recalling some of its pet foods due to a production mistake which led to incorrect levels of certain nutritional elements in the foods.

Nutro recalls several dry cat foods

The recall involves several of the dry cat food formulations marketed by Nutro. The cat food products being recalled include the Max Cat and Natural Choice Complete Care dry cat formulations.

The following dry cat formulations have been voluntarily recalled by Nutro:

  • Max Cat  - Adult Roasted Chicken, Indoor Adult Roasted Chicken, Indoor Adult Salmon and Indoor Weight Control
  • Natural Choice Complete Care - Adult Chicken, Kitten, Adult Ocean Fish

Additionally, the products affected by this pet food recall have a "Best by" or "Best if Used By" date between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010.

Pet food recall does not include dog foods

Unlike the massive pet food recall in 2007, this pet food recall does not include dog foods. Only the cat food products listed above are involved in the pet food recall. No other Nutro products are being recalled. Nutro stresses that Nutro brand dry and wet dog food formulations, Nutro brand wet cat food formulations and all Nutro brand dog and cat food treats are safe.

Nutro recalled these dry cat foods due to a pre-mix error which resulted in incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in the affected cat foods.

Cat food recall includes United States and ten other countries

The affected Nutro dry cat foods being recalled were distributed within all 50 states. Retailers in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Isreal are also affected.

Cats affected by pet food recall

These pet foods are being recalled by Nutro because they are not nutritionally balanced. Consumers who have been feeding these diets to their cats are urged to contact their veterinarian if the cat is:

  • not eating,
  • losing weight.
  • vomiting, or
  • experiencing diarrhea.

Cat owners should also consult their veterinarians if their cat is pregnant.

Cat owners feeding these diets should discontinue the diets immediately and replace the diet with another nutritionally balanced cat food diet.

What to do with recalled pet foods

Cat owners who purchased these recalled cat foods may return the foods to the retailer for a full refund or an exchange for another Nutro brand dry cat food product.

For further information, consumers are urged to contact Nutro Consumer Services at                     1-800-833-5330

Is anyone really suprised by this?! This has been a LONG time coming, and it's interesting to me that about 6 months ago there were complaints of pets experiencing ZINC and Copper toxicity syptoms, and Nutro denied ANY cases. In my opinion this company is grossly negligent. Any HONEST Pet Food manufacturer would have investigated insteading of trying to pass the blame and be in denial about this issue when it began. Oh well, this is exactly why i would NEVER feed this CRAP to my animals!!!

I hope Nutro goes out of business!!! This LYING, IRRESPONSIBLE company makes second grade pet food FILLED with grain and UNSPECIFIED animal fats. It's along the same quality line as high end Purina! (Although i would feed ProPlan over Nutro in a bind!) my animals have never and WILL NEVER eat these unreliable, grainy, horrible foods! And as for the food helping with joints-BS- Try just enough glucosamine/chondroitin to make it postable on the bag- NOT enough to help your pet!

If you are worried about your pet(s) skin/coat and must feed a kibbl;e- Try AvoDerm. They actually specialize in skin and coat health, but without all of the junk. Innova is a great food also- my dogs have been on it for years and their coats, teeth, eyes, and poop are great! It's just a little more expensive, so Avoderm is a nice option to have.

I am amused by comments about grains in dog food. what are grains? Why are they bad? Is meat better? Does that mean vegetarians are eating inferior or poor diets? I am not a fan of animal fats but they sure taste good. Why does it matter if it is unspecified. Is chicken fat worse than cow fat or pig fat or whatever fat? fat is fat, it is essential in all diets and has to come from somewhere. I agree we should all pray Nutro goes out of business. they have always been an unethical company. they will never change.

The problenm with unspecified animal fats is exactly that-they are unspecified. ie- we do not know the source. (it could be horse,pig,dog,etc..) And as far as grains go, wheat is undigestible by carnivores. And* Vegitarians DO eat grains!* Barley, Oatmeal, Quinoa, and Brown rice are better, but most grain will ferment in your pet's digest tract causing everyting from gas to bad breath. ALL PREMIUM pet food manufacturers DO specify the source. I have asked Nutro why they don't clearly specify the source, and the response I got FROM THE RP. was that they can't guarantee which fat it is! As far as grain in Nutro products- Meat may be the 1stingredient on the back of the bag, but that is PRE-COOKED weight in descending order. Meaning that since it is followed by at least 5 different forms of rice, etc.., the meat ends up being about the 6th or 7th ingredient after cooking. There are plenty of other fatty acid sources out there, Nutro is just too cheap to put them in their foods. (flax, canola, olive oil, salmon oil, etc..

Added to my last comment above- (To clarify)- Vegitariens get their fatty acid from plant sources such as the ones i previosly listed. Now, back to the REAL ISSUE- Dogs being Omnivores can digest and utilize some of the higher quality grains, but corn, wheat, and soy are not only common allergens, they are also have little to know nutritional value to PETS. Cats however are a completely different story. Although they will eat wheatgrass (and often your houseplants!), they are purely carniverous. This means they will DIE without meat. Taurine is essential for felines to survive, and it is only available in animal sources. They will go blind, and eventually go into renal failure. Nutro is CRAP!
