Pet Products Review: Mimi Litter Silica Cat Litter only at Walmart 4 lbs bag

Ok here is a blog post that I'm having a bit of difficulty with.  I have a cat, Stinky, so of course litter, only the highest quality, odor absorbing, paw friendly litter will do for my kitty.  Personally, I love the crystal litter.  So does Stinky.  When I use litter such as Fresh Step, I never, ever smell any cat urine odor.  Only problem is Fresh Step is expensive.  I'm sorry, it really is.  So, I've been on the search for an alternative.

Now I shop at Walmart frequently.  Quite simply, they have the best prices of any pet or department store, period! and their selection is awesome.  One of the products they carry is a Silica sand type litter called Mimi Litter.  It is different from anything I've seen before.

Mimi_litter_images_thumb

Now Silica is a porous granular form of sodium silicate which absorbs odor. It is the same stuff that comes in those little packets that you frequently find in snack foods or imported good.  The bag of Mimi Litter claims that it inhibits bacteria, its totally environmentally friendly and it absorbs and cotrols the odor of urin and feces in second.  They also claim that you spend much less money because one bag will last 1 full month.

Well, I can tell you, it does certainly do a great job of absorbing odors.  As for saving money, yes, 1 bag is only $4 compared to over $8 for Fresh Step or Tidy Cats.  But I don't believe 1 bag lasts a month.  I don't care what brand it is, or what claims, I change Stinky's litter every week.

Environmentally friendly?  well it is approved by the UKAS Environmental Management, which I looked up and is a 3rd party environmental standards organization, but let's face it, the product is manufactured in China which does not have a reputation for making anything environmentally friendly.  Which brings me to the point, why is this product only sold at Walmart?  I couldnt find it anywhere else.  This I am not completely fine with.

So all in all, I guess you can say, Mimi Litter has everything I'm looking for in a litter, my cat likes it, the price is right.  But I may opt to spend a bit more money on either Fresh Step Crystals or Tidy Cat Crystals because I know they come from American companies that make safety its top priority.

If you've got a product you think will pass the Secret Shopper Test, send an email to SecretShopperBlog@gmail.com

If walmart sells this product then it must be good. Walmart has one of the most stringent quality control panels. Every product must be safe to be sold there.

i haven't been able to find it at 2 wallmarts here in san diego... very frustrating as I am addicted! i tried a new 'organic' one that looks like silica but is a fluffy material, and it sucks - help!

this cat litter is amazing! i was in walmart looking for litter when this little old lady came up to me telling me that she only changes her cat little once a month and shes got 9 cats! i thought that was pretty gross. BUT i gave it a try with my 1 cat, and we both loved it! he tried playing in it at first, then figured out it was his bathroom. It soaks up well and covers the smell too! I urge anyone who buys cat litter to buy mimi litter.

this stuff comes from China. Buy American! CHINA KILLS 36,000 DOGS AFTER RABIES DEATHS On June 16, 2009, in the city of Hanzhong in the northern province of Shaanxi, 36,000 dogs were put to their death - not only stray dogs but people's pets - in an effort to rid the area of rabies. 12 people died of rabies in 6 weeks and the mayor felt the only way to stop the "epidemic" was to immediately take "control" and have dogs put to death.

I too am bummed. First the super walmart in our area quit selling it. The positive was I bought like 10 bags at clearance prices. Now even the regular walmarts don't carry it! I can't stand clumping litter. I scoop the poop to the toilet and I am afraid it will clog. I want my MIMI BACK!!!!!!!!

This may answer your question as to why you are unable to locate it in your Walmart. I just went to mine to purchase it this morning and, while they had about a dozen bags on the shelf, when I got up to the register they were not allowed to sell it to me. There appears to be some kind of recall on it but I have yet to find anything online about what it is. I'll keep looking and post anything I find here...would appreciate if you all would do the same. I LOVE THIS STUFF, but we may need to find an alternative.

I also had the same experience today at our walmart as cantw85glory did. We desperately needed new litter. We swear by this stuff. My wife even begged and pleaded with them to sell it... but they said the can not. But we too were not able to find out a reason.

I tried to purchase 2 bags of this cat litter at Walmart today and was told it couldn't be sold to me. No explanation was given whatsoever. Is there a recall on this for some reason? I have been using this littler for a couple of months now(I actually mix it with Pro-Pet Fresh Results) and have been very pleased with it. I would buy another brand but I find they are much more costly. If anyone knows what's going on with this product and why it is no longer available, please post your findings here. I found Walmart to be most uncooperative with providing any explanations.

I also tried two different Wal Marts this weekend. The first offered no explanation whatsoever except maybe corporate made an error but they could not sell me my two bags of Mimi Cat. The next day I tried another to be told I still could not purchase it but maybe it was on some kind of recall? I asked if they usually left the shelves stocked when a recall came in and was not given an answer. I have four cats and I totally swear by this stuff. I am now concerned that if there is a reason for recall, and I have been using this litter for MONTHS, is there a risk to my family or my pets?

I bought Mimi litter for the first time last week (Wednesday or Thursday I think). I had been using Tidy Cats crystals for two years and loved it, but I haven't been able to find it in any stores for the past few months. Anyway, Mimi seemed to be working well, but now I'm really worried, since I bought it just a few days before Walmart started refusing to sell it. If there were a recall due to the product being dangerous, you'd hope they would announce it. Any information would be most welcome!

There's a thread on Yahoo Answers about this; apparently, it's happening to all litters that contain silica gel (such as Tidy Cats Crystals Blend): http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090829161122AATheIo

Hi. Since this is showing up on google searches, I thought I'd add what I know about it. There have been several comments on yahoo answers about this, and the one thing they all have in common is that they were trying to buy at Walmart. Beyond that, it appeared to include different types of litter (including their own Special Kitty brand, which several around the country couldn't buy). This is just a guess, but when it's one store only having this problem, and it's all over the country including several brands, it sounds like a computer glitch, or someone entering the wrong code on something. Since Walmart can't be relied upon to give out info in a timely manner, it sure would be useful to hear from someone who bought litter there today!

I work the Customer Service desk at Wal-Mart. I check my e-mail every morning and have not yet seen an e-mail on why this litter is not allowed to be sold. I am also curious as to why its being recalled or if there was a mistake because I have used this litter recently. We are sometimes never given a reason for a recall and are told to pull it from the shelves. I have checked into it and can find no explanation for the "sale not allowed"

Here is what I wrote to the company and what I got back... I did however; speak with Brian, the assistant manager at the local WalMart where I live and he said it started in CA but because a "Pull and Hold" was issued it effected EVERY WalMart and no one can sell until it's lifted. He would call and let me know when it has been and what the cause was. Now here's what the company had to say and my letter follows underneath. I guess they forwarded an email sent to someone else regarding the same but this may answer some questions. Regarding the recall of the product, it has no relationship with the product quality. Please kindly rest assured! MiMI Litter will not do any harm to your family, pet and you. Our product can inhibit the growth of bacteria through adsorbing moisture, while California of your country issued an act about pesticide and environmental protection that does not allow any words in relation to bacteria to be shown on the packaging of MiMi litter. We are now developing and designing the new packaging. Looking forward to your continuous attention and support! Thank you! This is the email response I received from Walmart Customer Service today concerning Mimi Cat Litter: Dear Margaret, Thank you for contacting us about the Mimi Cat Litter. We have forwarded your request to our buying office and we have received the following information to share with you. The government has guidelines governing anti-bacterial statements that may not have been followed as closely as they should have, so we've asked the suppliers to reevaluate their packaging. There is no risk to human or animal health. Again, thank you for contacting us and for your business. If we can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail at www.walmartstores.com or by phone at 1-800-WAL-MART. Sincerely, Jennifer Wal-Mart Merchandising Team

My mother did get a straight answer from one of the people stocking the shelves at Walmart. Turns out they had a lot of the Mimi litter in the back and were not able to put it out for sale because they were in dispute with the manufacture. The litter, itself, is safe...I repeat, THE LITTER IS SAFE! Once the kinks get ironed out between Walmart and the manufacturer (which it appears from previous posts regarding packaging) Mimi litter will be back on the shelves.

I LOVE this litter! I tried the VERY expensive other version ($14/bag) and thought that my Mimi Litter actually worked better! I have two cats and one bag (about $4) lasts for two weeks. I have been using the clay litters for the last week or so (since I can't buy Mimi) and I despise it, as do my cats! I'm using a name brand litter for multiple cats that, as the label reads "neutralizes odor" NOT! I certainly hope this situation is resolved soon! I can't take these clay litters much longer! My mother works at Wal-mart, which is how I found out about the recall. They have tons of it in their holding but all they were told was there was a recall and nothing else. I have used Mimi's for over 3 years, not liking this at all!

I love Mimi crystal cat litter. I have 4 cats one will not use any other litter. Problem all the Walmart stores around me do not carry it anymore. I wish some place else carried it. You cannot order it off Walmart's online shopping site either. Someone please help! Talked to the local store and they don't understand why they don't carry it anymore because it was a best seller. Go figure.

People, it's not a recall its a "Pull and Hold" for labeling purposes. Apparently there is something to do with the labeling in California that needs to be changed. The manufacturer is working on it. Until a solution is found though the "HOLD" will not be lifted and we have to find an alternate solution. They will however, continue to sell the litter after the labeling has been changed.

Why do people keep asking the same questions? Are you not reading the previous comments, of which several seem to explain everything pretty clearly? I appreciate mi_loir's and donmarmatt's intelligent, knowledgeable answers. Complaining to Walmart or the manufacturer is pointless (especially on this site where they aren't going to see it anyway!) because they will get the litter back on the shelf when, and only when, the packaging issue is resolved. I anxiously await the return of Mimi Litter as well. There is nothing to do but be patient.

I also tried to buy the cat litter. They would not sell it to me. I love the stuff and the price. I have only been able to find it at one local wal-mart before this and I am afraid they won't restock it after they take care of the "bacteria" wording problem. Leave it to CA to screw it up for the rest of the US. (nothing personal against MIMI users)

I bought the Kroger Pet Pride crystal cat litter and paid $5.99 for 4 lbs. The crystals are much larger....kind of like rock salt. Don't think my cats are going to like it as much as the Mimi litter but will have to make do 'til issue is resolved with WalMart.

I am with the rest of yall when saying that my cats love this mimi litter. But when i went to two different walmarts to purchase it and was told that they could not sell it to me i was highly pissed. If walmart cant sell it then by god they shouldnt have it on the shelves. Really frustrated with this. Please walmart remove this litter from your shelves if you cant sell it so no-one else has to be embarrased at the counter like myself or to get upset over it. cajun_rainbow68@yahoo.com

I agree 100 percent! This litter is the best that I have ever found!! Tried "Worlds Best Cat Litter" all natrual crap and it was over $20 a bag!! HUGE waste of money!! I want MiMi's back and sent an email to the China based company to ask about buying it direct if the corporate HOG Wal-Mart won't sell it. Millions of products we use here in the US are China made and other countries. People would be VERY restricted if they bought everything US made. Not to mention, I don't understand how if a product is made in the US is it so much more expensive than a product made across the globe. If we are to buy American then make those made here a little more affordable!

LOL! I never thought I'd be online looking for a "cat litter" product - but as my 13 yr old daughter would say - "OMG!" We too are MiMi cat litter users. Thanks to this thread, I've learned a lot about why it is not available.____I want to add something about Wal Mart. i used to work for one of the biggest food manufacturers in our country, U.S.A. and I can tell you, Wal Mart says do it our way or you won't do it with us!!! Did any of you see the press release where Wal Mart is going to require manufacturers to include carbon emmission/carbon foot print information on their products? They said they would not sell it if the manufacturer did not include the information. Well I can tell you from first had experience, it is us consumers who will pay for this new policy. Wal Mart seems a little too big for their britches... as my Mother used to say!!!

I'm right with everyone else on here loving MiMi litter. We live on fort hood and with this community being all soldiers on a budget, the MiMi litter goes FAST at walmart and all of a sudden I couldn't find it, couldn't even find the yellow sticker with the price on it on the shelf anymore!!! I can't wait to get it back... BUT what really pisses me off is that all the other silica gel based litters are 3 times as expensive and its all the same thing in the end! It just goes to show how much prices are hiked up because they think they can get away with it! Its us who suffer in the end while those d*bags are walking with their pockets lined! I too love the Mimi litter,(and so does my very picky cat). About a month ago, I was in Walmart,it was on the shelf-however,when I tried to buy it-I was told "SORRY-this product is on recall".So,looked it up on line, was told it should be back on the shelves w/in the week,if not already. That was a mo.ago, and it's still not there.Too bad someone can't get their bleepity bleeps off their high horses, and take care of a problem, that wasn't even a problem in the first place.Just fix the issues and get it back to the people who pay for those horses they ride on so high & mighty. We are about to move cross country,& will have to use a litter that will make such a mess in the cab of the truck. This is the most ridiculous, outragest customer service,EVER.

So far it hasn't worked but it sure is fun.I had a feeling the State of California had something to do with this.! No other cat litter works half as good as Mimi . I had no idea of the whole "not available for sale" until my son went in last night to buy some. I had not used it in a while but wanted to use it again because it is amazing at getting rid of the cat urine smell. What pisses me off the most is, they know they can't sell it and haven't been able to for months but yet they still have it on the blasted shelves. At least if it wasn't on the shelves I wouldn't be so pissed off but to let the customer take it up to the counter all happy because they think they can actually buy it, then to be told.. ohhh... sorry, you can't have it. Too bad we can't buy direct from the manufacturer. I'll have to try the Kroger brand and see how that compares.

Hullo? This stuff comes from CHINA!!!! Notorious for toxic products! Why would anyone want to but something toxic for his or her cat, even if it does work? WAL-MART is known for coerce American companies to cut their prices or else they will go out side the country to buy their products. 1. I would NEVER buy from WAL-MART because they have bullied small American companies out of business 2. China? Did we not learn about children’s toys? Did you know they found the yellow paint we use to paint the lines on roads in China’s exported medication? YES? Stop and think about what you are doing to save a $ or effort.
