"Come Back, Como" by Steven Winn

What if the family dog loves everyone in your family but you? Steven Winn, author of "Come Back, Como: Winning the Heart of a Reluctant Dog," takes a humorous look at one father's relationship with a dog who wanted nothing whatsoever to do with him and the lessons he learned about love and families.
About Steven Winn:
Award-winning journalist and fiction writer Steven Winn was a staff writer at the San Francisco Chronicle. A former Wallace Stegner Fellow in Fiction at Stanford University and a founding staff member of the Seattle Weekly, his work has appeared in publications from Good Housekeeping, Parenting, and Parents, to Sports Illustrated, AARP magazine, the Utne Reader, and the National Lampoon. He has appeared on 20/20, the Today Show, NBC Nightly News, A&E Biography, and NPR.
About the book:
Based on a beloved ten-part series in the San Francisco Chronicle, the tender and hilarious story of one man's uncommonly rich experience with a dog who wanted nothing whatsoever to do with him

Steven Winn wanted a dog for his family--for companionship, for laughter, for holidays together, and stories to tell. But when his daughter fell in love with a scraggly, man-hating terrier mix named Como from a local animal shelter, Winn got far more than he'd bargained for. Traumatized, single-minded, and clever, Como was bent on breaking Winn's sanity, his bankbook, and his heart.
COME BACK, COMO is the story of a unique journey: one man's valiant quest to win the love of a truly one-of-a-kind dog, a creature usually thought of as man's best friend. With humor and pathos, Winn describes the exasperating but ultimately rewarding effects Como had on his family, the ordeals he and his dog endured together, and the greatest lesson Como taught him: that loving a dog can somehow make us more human.

Pet Products Review - Return Moi Pets - Bringing Your Pets Home .... Pet Recovery
As you all know, I travel quite a bit. In fact, next week, I'll be away on vacation. When I travel, what's my biggest fear? Let's put it this way, I am totally consumed 24 hours a day on where my pet is, and if he's okay. Yes, he is microchipped, and he has pet sitters, but, seriously, thats not enough. You know there are rare times, when out of fear or panic, your dog escapes and runs away. And lets face it, they have 4 legs, and a lot faster than you. Now, imagine, your' a dog walker, or watching a pet, what do you do when this happens. Hopefully the owner left instructions what to do, and who to call.
So that's the basic, I've been introduced to one more level of pet protection and pet recovery that I think is quite ingenious. Its called ReturnMoiPets. I'm going to recommend immediately that you go to www.returnmoipets.com for info. Now, what ReturnMoiPets does is give you a tag with an ID number, then you simply go online and create an online profile of your pet. Hopefully, that will be the end of your relationship with ReturnMoi, but in the case your pet goes missing or is lost, you call them. From there ReturnMoi calls pet owners all over the area and creates a search and rescue alert. Then, they incent people with a special gift pack to look for your lost pet and make a call if they see them.
Here is a short video to describe the service:
ReturnMoiPets is a simple concept but one, I think, is super affective. If you're concerned about your pets' where abouts like I am, and certainly if you're an active traveler, consider ReturnMoiPets. Go to www.returnmoi.com for more info.

Pet Products Review - Meadowlands Horse and Pet Expo
As you may know, every weekend Champ my Sheltie and I escape to the country for a weekend drive. This week New Jersey to attend the the annual Meadowlands Horse and Pet Expo.
What a pleasantly fun day! Our friend and daddy of two kitties Patty joined us. Champ was very excited to attend this event as its an expo that allows both children and well behaved pets to attend; and this was a well attended event.
The Meadowlands pet Expo has something for every animal lover and pet enthusiast. At the show there were many educational and entertaining performances, special attractions, a petting zoo, pedigree dog shows, on-site pet adoptions and of course shopping!
I couldn't believe that they had in the expo building 2 full grown elephants and offered rides. My personal favorite was the wolf den. A cage where you can actually go in and pet and hug real life big, gorgeous wolves. Of course Champ was scared of the big not-bad wolves and wouldn't let me go in. My next favorite was the albino all white alligator. There are only 30 known albino alligators in the world and the Pet Expo in New Jersey had one of them. Patty couldn't stop watching the frisbee tossing contests.

There were many breeds of dogs on location for the dog show. We happened to be there right when the Siberian Huskies, Neapolitan Mastiff, Shih Tzu and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were being showcased. How interesting these shows are.
As for exhibitors, there were many local pet stores on hand and a few rescue organizations. I was dissapointed that not many national pet product companies exhibited but those that did stood out. Fresh Pet, Nature's Variety, PatriaPet, Dogswell, and American BioSciences had wonderful representation. A pet Supply Stor called Care-A-Lot was at the show and had some of the best prices I've ever seen for very good quality pet products. Go to their website www.CareALotPets.com for their eStore and catalogue.
The next show will be in Reading, PA on March 20-22, 2009. Only thing is do check the schedule at www.horseandpetexpo.com because due to the popularity of this event, there are special hours when pets are allowed. And take it from Champ, the noise level was very high, and at times both the noise and the crowds scared Champ a little. But do bring your pet, because there is a pet photo contest.
