Wellness_just_for_puppy_thumb

Well this week my puppy Charlie and I have been traveling.  As you know when you travel, things happen like you run out of your standard brand dog food.  Lucky for me, I had with me a big box of toys and travel treats sent to me by the people at Wellness.  In that box was a bag of Wellness Super5Mix Just for Puppy kibble.  Now normally I don't like to switch around dog food from brand to brand, but I trust Wellness and have always liked there products for my older dogs.  Charlie my 16 week old Sheltie didn't mind a change at all.  In fact, Charlie loved the Wellness Super5Mix Just for Puppy.  He ate all his bowls with great enthusiam

Super5Mix is great for puppies.  It is especially designed for smaller puppy mouths with a smaller sized kibble.  The food is packed with natural DHA and supports bone and muscular develoment.  In fact Wellness Super5Mix Just for Puppy is a natural recipe that uses the optimal balance of nutrient rich whole-foods and no grains to support your puppy's growth in its foundation year.

If you have a puppy and looking for the best nutrition especially designed for puppies, do consider Wellness Super5Mix Just for Puppies.  You can buy a 16lbs bag from Petco for only $32.  Go here to order yours:

Pet Product Review - SIMPLE Food Solutions from Wellness, Canned 12.05 oz

Of all the new healthy super premium pet food companies, I have to say Wellness is doing the best job at delivering to the market new products that have "solution".  With that they've sent me a big box of their new SIMPLE Food Solutions.  This is a new line from Wellness specifically designed to be the natural solution for Dogs Suffering from Food Allergies or Intolerances.  Since my dog is just a puppy, I gave the entire box which included a big bag of the dry mix and a big box of 12.5 oz canns of Lamb, Duck and Salmon to my friend Tony and his Doberman Senta.

Well we're not nutrition experts so our response is quite candid.  This is what Tony had to say:

"OK, I've only been able to give her two products so far: Simple brand 95% salmon and Simple brand 95% lamb.

For both types of Simple brand, Senta loved them. She has never had wet dog food before, and she devoured the salmon very quickly. One thing that I noticed about the salmon dog food was that it did affect her breath some as the oils from the fish lingered in her mouth. Smelled like cat breath if you ask me! The lamb was equally welcome, she ate that up quickly as well. The next day for both types her stool was a bit looser than normal, so I think I will be adding some more dry food to the wet to increase the consistency. I think that overall the products are very forthright in their content: 95 percent of the meat and no grain and for both types that you gave me she enjoyed them.

Next I'm going to try the Simple brand dry food and maybe mix some in with the other brand of wet food (the one in the box).

How much does Simple canned food go for? I actually think I might buy some!"

Emphasis on the last sentence please "I might buy some!" that is good coming from a New Yorker!

Here is what the experts at Wellness say about the SIMPLE Food Solutions:

"Less is More! For some dogs that means eating a simplified diet that uses a unique protein source while removing additional proteins, carbohydrates, fillers and additives.

Utilizing our unique 1 + 1 system, we combine one novel animal protein source plus one easily digestible carbohydrate source with a short, yet complete list of key ingredients – and nothing extra. This special, natural recipe limits the number of ingredients your dog is exposed to each day while nourishing simply and completely.

The 5 Key Ingredients

Simple Food Solutions Formulas have only 5 main ingredients carefully chosen for their quality, nutritional value and their ability to nourish with simplicity:

Duck, Lamb or Salmon are chosen as "novel," high quality alternative to common proteins like beef and chicken due to its unique amino acid profile.

Canola Oil This high quality fat source is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids to help your dog maintain healthy skin and coat from the inside out.

Tomato Pomace An ingredient rich in the antioxidant lycopene and an excellent dietary fiber source to help maintain digestive health and produce healthy stools.

Vitamins & Minerals A complete blend of everything your dog needs for daily wellbeing including antioxidants, vitamins and minerals

A Comprehensive "No" List

free of Wheat, Corn, Soy, Dairy, and Eggs

Simple Food Solutions contains NO Meat by-products, Dairy, Corn, Soy, Wheat, Eggs, Artificial Preservatives, Colors or Flavors. This “NO” list contains common allergens or irritants often found in other pet food.

I love how its not full of grains like the supermarket dog foods, and its made in the USA, so no worry about recalls.  All in all good stuff.  Go to their site http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/dog_wellness_simple_food_solutions_index.html  or an online distributor like Pet Food Direct.  At Pet Food Direct use the discount code "THANKS" for an additonal discount off the 12 cans for $25.99:

Pet Products Review - No Grainers® Dog Biscuits and Treats THE 100% grain-free alternative

As you all know, I shop at Walmart quite a bit.  I love the store for their great prices and high quality selection of pet products, in particular treats.  Well on recent trips, I've seen big displays of a new product called No Grainers.  They certainly caught my attention with the bright blue packaging and healthy message.  So when the people at No Grainers sent me a sample of their 100%Grain Free dog treats, I couldn't wait to try them.

Well, lucky for me my friend Tony moved in just a block away.  He has a 4 year old beautiful Doberman.  During the move she was very anxious and acclimating to the new apartment very stressful.  I brought over a 7 oz bag of No Grainers Hickory Smoked Pork Flavor dog treats and some raw hide and pigs ears.  I thought it would keep her busy while Tony and I moved boxes.  Let me tell you, I was surprised when Senta, the Doberman wanted more No Grainers treats preferring them to the raw hide.  They must be good, and must be tasty.  Because I don't know what could be more delicious to a dog than a smoked pigs ear.

So not only do I recommend No Grainers for their taste, and the fact that they are high in protein, they are healthy too. But those are my words.  Here are the words from the professionals at the manufacturer HBH validated by the press:

"pringville, UT (Vocus/PRWEB ) June 3, 2009 -- Allergies are the number one reason veterinarians treat dogs nationwide, according to the Veterinary Pet Insurance Company (as posted by the American Veterinary Medical Association), costing Americans approximately $16 million in vet bills each year. Many pet owners do not know most dog treats contain inexpensive corn and wheat fillers. In fact, grain-based treats can cause increased allergic reactions in dogs that have sensitivities to corn and wheat. With dog health and happiness in mind, HBH Pet Products carefully formulated No Grainers® Dog Biscuits and Treats as a unique 100% grain-free alternative specifically for pet owners who want to give their dogs a natural reward."

I recommend you stop in your local Walmart store to purchase No Grainers.  The price is right at only $3.50 for a 20 oz bag, can you believe it?!  And for training assistance products to compliment use of the treats go to this Walmart page:  http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_query=no+grainers&search_constraint=0&tc=0&ic=48_0&ref=+243033.244189&tabvalue=893_All

Pet Product Review:  Holistic Select Duck Strips Natural Dog Treats 6oz bag

The people at Holistic Select sent Champ and I the most wonderful bag of treats; Holistic Select Duck Strips Natural Dog Treats 6oz bag.

Holistic Select Duck Strips Natural Dog Treats 6oz bagBut as you know, I've been trying not to "over treat" Champ as it is fattening and it spoils him.  So I gave the sample bag to my friend Paul who has three lovely dogs (all rescued).  Now, when it comes to an opinion, Paul I trust.  He's outspoken, and doesn't hesitate to let you know exactly how he feels.   Here was his quick review: "It’s worth mentioning that I’ve yet to find a treat that they don’t garble up like it’s their last meal.

So my view is this. If it’s healthy (made of real food, not overly processed junk, not too salty, with an appropriate blend of nutrients for dogs their age/size) and if it’s not too expensive, then I’m a fan"

papa and pupsWell Paul, I didn't taste the treats, but I can tell you they are healthy.  Holistic Select is "Made In the USA" always a plus in my book, and only uses the finest all natural ingredients:    Duck (preserved with natural mixed tocopherols), brown rice, sea salt, rosemary extract, zinc proteinate, vitamin E supplement, coated ascorbic acid (source of Vitamin C)

As for the price, I think they are an excellent price considering the quality of the treat.  Remember, they are "treats" not meals.  Pet Food Direct has the best selection and prices at $7.19 for a 6oz bag:
