Pet Products Review - Stella & Chewy's Carnivore Crunch Treats Beef net 4 oz.

As you know, I've been trying to cut back on the number of treats I give my cat and my dog.  But last week, the people at Stella & Chewy's sent me a sample bag of Stella & Chewy's Carnivore Crunch Treats Beef net 4 oz.  Since Champ was a good boy, I was happy to oblige him with this treat.

Stella & Chewy's Carnivore Crunch Treats Beef net 4 oz.

Now I heard great things about Stella & Chewy's.  This premium pet treat company is committed to using the very best, highest quality raw, USDA-inspected meats, raised naturally with no added hormones or antibiotics, and that includes no sugar and no salt.  The treats are freeze-dried so and can be given as rewards for training, good behavior or even crumbled on top of daily food.  What more can you ask for?

If you're looking for a treat that is not fatty, look no further, Stella & Chewy's Carnivore Crunch Treats Beef has 42% crude protein.  It also comes in Chicken and Duck flavors.

A 4 oz bag of Farm Fresh Stella & Chewy's will cost $12 and I've found them at one of my favorite New York retailers, Tricxie + Peanut:

Pet Product Review - ZiwiPeak 'Daily-Dog' Cuisine Venison / Lamb

As you may know, everyday I receive a box of samples and goodies to test out for my reviews.  Well would believe that the other day a box came from New Zealand?  Yes! a company called ZiwiPeak is breaking into the US market.  I love the ZiwiPeak philosophy and that is to make products "formulated on the same balance of meat ingredients that cats and dogs would find by hunting in the wild."

We tried the ZiwiPeak 'Daily-Dog' Cuisine Venison / Lamb.  Each sample was a small pouch of about 2 oz of small jerky like meat bits. What I like is that this is a transition product should you be interested in giving your pet a raw diet. You can tell it was nothing but real meat. In fact the ingredients are:

  • Venison (meat min 65%, venison organs min 19.5%)
  • Venison & Fish (meat min 50%, venison organs min 19.5%, Hoki fish min 15%)
  • Lamb (meat min 65%, lamb organs min 19.5%)

ziwipeak   Now I went on the website, I read all of the material provided and all it said was to give 1 scoop per pound of pet.  Well, from the samples that they sent me, yes, they look like a scoop, but it certainly was not enough to feed my 30lbs dog, or even my cat.  Do you mix this product in with other dry kibble?  Well, that's what I did.  Everyday I mix a little bit of wet  food in with my dog's dry kibble.  On the days we tested this sample, I replaced the small bit of wet food with a sample pouch of ZiwiPeak Dog Cuisine.  Yes, he did love it.  And I feel it was a nice substitue for canned wet food.

But keep in mind, if you're using this product as a standalone product, it is very expensive.  For a $2.2lbs bag the price is $27 in the local pet store near me.  I did find it on sale for $22.14 at PetsWarehouse:  www.pets-warehouse.com

You know it became apparent that when introducing a new product that hopes to change peoples' lifestyles and feeding patterns for their pets, your website needs to be extremely clear with the message, feeding instructions and have fool-proof navigation.  I for myself would feel more comfortable giving a stronger recommendation of the product if I had more samples to accurately determine how its affected my pets, and clear answers to my questions on past recall, sourcing, feeding amounts, and best way to introduce the product into my dog's diet. Unfortunately the petstores I visited were not able to answer these questions either.

Pet Products Review - Wellness CORE Grain Free Salmon, Whitefish and Herring Formula Canned Dog Food 5 oz can

As you may know, the other day I posted a review on a superior Cat food product manufactured by Wellness Natural Food and Treats for Pets.   Today, I am posting my review of one of their dog food formulas - Wellness CORE Grain Free Salmon, Whitefish and Herring Formula Canned Dog Food 5 oz can.

Wellness Core Dog Food

Wellness CORE canned formulas for Dogs and Cats together represent Wellness's successful efforts in providing a higher protein, grain-free pet food that is nutrient-packed and contains high quality protein sources that are grain free right down to the source. What drove their initiative was the desire to bring your dog back to a diet similar to a "raw" diet that is most natural with their genetic make up and being; a diet rich in nutrients and meets that are super high in valuable protein.  Left out is the caloric density that can create long-term obesity.

Let's talk about taste.  I mixed a 5 oz can of Wellness CORE Grain Free Salmon, Whitefish and Herring Formula Canned Dog Food in with my Dog Champ's regular dry food.  This is recommended by the way.  Champ who is a very finicky eater consumed his whole bowl right away and seemed to really enjoy the seafood.  Champ has tried other brands of seafood based dogfood, rejects most all of the seafood varieties; especially the kinds that look like chum.  As Champ's server, I found Wellness CORE Grain Free Salmon, Whitefish and Herring Formula Canned Dog Food to have a pleasant smell, not over powering, and a good consistency for mixing in with dry food.

I highly recommend Wellness CORE Grain Free Salmon, Whitefish and Herring Formula Canned Dog Food brands.  If you're shopping online, I recommend going to PetFoodDirect.com for this brand.  They have the best prices I saw and ship quickly.  This link will bring your directly to the Wellness page: Petfooddirect.com/wellness/seafood.

Pet Products Review - FreshPet Select Adult Chicken Vegetable and Rice Natural Dog Food

You may remember two weeks ago I attended the Horse and Pet Expo.  My goal was to find and report on new and unique brands for our dog loving community.  Perhaps the most impressive company at the show was FreshPet Natural Dog Food.  They were giving out samples, or should I say a week's supply, of their all natural dog food - the FreshPet Select Slice and Serve.  Champ and I took home the FreshPet Adult Chicken Vegetable and Rice Natural Dog Food selection.

freshpet select

All I can say is what a great product.  Yes, it is dog food, but one that's refrigerated and comes in a plastic tube package.  It reminded me of a big liverwurst.  What you do is slice off a measured amount depending on the size and weight of your dog and serve it either stand alone or as a compliment to his/her kibble.  There is a measuring guide on the side of the package so you know exactly how much to serve.  So basically, you slice and serve, how simple?

The FreshPet Select Adult Chicken Vegetable and Rice Naatural Dog Food has a great aroma and consistency.  FreshPet Select is packed with only chicken, eggs, liver, vegetables, rice and vitamins.  No preservatives or chemicals, hence it does need refridgeration.  It does look like bologna, and yes even taste like a mild version of it.  I tried just a little bit.  But, unlike Bologna, FreshPet Select has been specially formulated for easy digestibilty by dogs. Well hey, it is completely human grade food. Best of all my pup Champ loves it.

Now I feel great about incorporating FreshPet Select products into Champ's diet because the people at FreshPet set out in 2005 to create the very best all natural dog food using the same principles that the big human health food companies take; cooking only in small batches, using only all natural products and right here in the USA.  FreshPet Select is not raw pet food, it has been cooked, so there is no need to worry about harmful bacteria.

When looking for FreshPet Select products, you will have to check the refrigerated section of the store.  Go to www.freshpet.com to find the location nearest to you.  Most of the upscale supermarkets like Safeway, Gristedes, and Stop and Shop carry the product.

Pets Product Review - Prowl Dehydrated Raw Cat Food.

Last week I reviewed Verve which was an organic dog food made with minimally processed grains and dehydrated raw beef.  It did not go over too well with my pet. This week, I tried the a sister brand of organic food from the same company The Honest Kitchen - Prowl.

As I mentioned last week, I really want to support these organic and very healthy pet food brands.  The fact that I only want the very best for my pets is evident, and I'm willing to pay the additional costs for the products.  But just like with the dog food, Prowl did not impress my cat Stinky.

Despite following the instructions exactly Stinky left any bits of this food in his bowl.  In fact, he refused to go near the bowl even when I mixed the product in with his favorite canned wet food.

It may have been the smell.  Prowl is not for those with a sensitive nose.

Again, I am sure that Prowl is an outstanding product with the highest quality ingredients; it is just not perfered by my pets.  Do try the sample size first before spending the money on a large box.
