Pet Product Review - Polkadot Bakery Unique Dog Treats Boston

You know whenever I travel I try and find the most unique and special dog store or dog product I can.  Well this week I'm in historic Boston and stumbled across a gem.  The Polkadot Bakery Unique Dog Treats Boston.

This place is really specially because not only do they sell products that are handmade, all natural and have ingredients specifically selected to suite canine tastes.  Their story is as charming as the store.  They were inspired by a little homeless dog that warmed their heart.  This dog had only one eye and would dance everytime she got a little attention.  As it turned out, everyone loved her.

Now one of the things about Summer is that you're always being invited to bbq's and pool parties or to a summer weekend.  If you are, think about bringing a Polkadot Bakery gift.  I recommend the 16 oz bag of organic dog treats:

The bags are only $10.95 and make the perfect gift.  Go to their site for ordering information:  http://www.polkadog.com/shop.php?main_page=index&cPath=1

Or if you're in Boston, go to their store: Polka Dog Bakery is located at 256 Shawmut Avenue in Boston's historic South End

Pet Product Review - Pet Airways Introductory Fare $150

There are so many options of flying with your pet nowdays.  Some airlines like AirTran, Spirit and JetBlue allow pets to fly only in the cabin.  Great if you're a pet lover, but there are many so many regulations and not great for people with big dogs.  Then there are airlines like US Airways that allows pets in the cabbin, but not between certain cities, like shuttle flights.  Airlines like Delta and Nortwest not only are expensive, at $275 your pet becomes cargo and considered checked baggage.

Lucky for us dog owners of all shapes and sizes, Pet Airways is launching this July.  Now canine travelers have their own first class service where they fly in the main cabin.  But the seats have been replaced by sturdy kennels and pets are escorted to the four-leg only flight by attendants that will monitor the pets during the flight.  Service will include flights between New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles.  The fare will be $250, but should you act now, the introductory fare is $150.

Go to www.petairways.com for more information.

Pet Products Review - Kurgo Skybox Booster Seat

Ok, just today I'm reading Time Magazine, and what was a featured article? "Do We Love Our Dogs More Than People?"  Well, if it means letting Fluffy go shot gun over your best friend then absolutely!

But Just like any baby, if you're going to take them in the car with you, make sure you do it safely.  Lucky for us the people at Nutra-9 have exactly the products we need.  My favorite: Kurgo Skybox Booster Seat

Kurgo Skybox Booster SeatIs that not the cutest way you've ever seen safety packaged?

I'm recommending the Kurgo Skybox Booster Seat to my co-worker Soo Jin who has a pampered yorkie named Chanel.  I've heard she's been rumored to drive with Chanel on her lap; not good.....

The Kurgo Skybox Booster Seat offers a safe and secure alternative by providing enough elevation for mini-fido to have a clear view of the road ahead and a comfortable, secure padded seat to snuggle down on longer trips. The best part, is they are still within arm's reach when you have the desire to scratch their belly.

Benefits:

  • Holds up to 30 lbs
  • Washable padded liner keeps seat fresh and clean
  • Metal supports for structural integrity
  • Collapsible for easy storage when not in use
  • Installs quickly and securely
  • Adjustable tether easily attaches to a dog harness

This will work on vehicles that do not have adjustable head rests!

Dimensions:

  • Open: 16"W x 9"H x 13"D

• Collapsed: 16"W x 2"H x 13"D

Color:
Black with Orange Details

Order yours at Nutra-9.com for only $59.98.  Here are the details: www.nutra-9.com/skyboxboosterseat.aspx

Pet Products Review - New Orleans Mardi Gras 2009 - Krewe of Barkus Parade for Dogs

As you all may know, I don't always write about product reviews exclusively.  Sometimes I like to share experiences and tell you about places I've been.  Well this past weekend, I had the pleasure of going to New Orleans.  It was the week before Mardi Gras and completely crazy with parties and parades everyday.  And would you believe my favorite was the Mardi Gras parade for dogs.

The Parade is in its 17th year and is coordinated exclusively by the Krewe of Barkus.  The Mystic Krewe of Barkus is a non-profit organization founded by Wood Enterprises. To participate in the parades, dogs must register with the Krewe for membership and parade participation.  Many dogs registered and wore the most vibrant wonderful Mardi Gras costumes.  But, the real parade was on the side lines.  I swear every dog owner in New Orleans brought their dog to be a spectator.  It was so much fun!  You could see the joy and on the dog's faces as they neared the parade.  They just knew good times were in store.

The parade did last about 2 hours, and its route did go through most of the French Quarter. Not ony was it a fun afternoon, but the entire event was for a good cause: All members, and you can also become a member without parading and support their worthwhile cause benefiting homeless animal rescue and adoption.

For more information, Email info@barkus.org or mail to 1000 Bourbon St., Suite 317, New Orleans, LA 70116; Fax to (504) 522-0239

Pet Products Review - PetSmart PetsHotel

One of my passions is travel.  I travel as often as I can, visiting friends, family, beaches, resorts, historical cities and more.  My other passion(s) are my pets.  But the two don't always go together.  To that end, I'm always on the search for exactly the right pet care service while I'm away.

One of the challenges I've faces is consistency of services and professional credentials and of course value!

Today I stopped in a PetsHotel near the motor city.  The people at PetSmart are pretty smart for their PetsHotel covered all of my concerns.

There is so much I could write about that was positive about the PetsHotel operation.  But I suggest you go to their very informational website at www.petshotel.com for full details.

  http://petshotel.petsmart.com/tour/index.shtml

Here's what I liked about the PetsHotel I visited:

The facilites were incredibly clean and had no odor.

The staff was super friendly, even to humans, and well prepared to assist with my needs.  The playtime care specialist was even a certified trainer and a vet is always on call.

The playtime sessions looked organized and well supervised.

The prices were great, even with extra playtime sessions, salon services and snack kong or lactose-free soft serve ice cream treats.

What did not impress me were open exposed atrium rooms.  Spend the extra $10 for the suite with a TV and a cot bed.

What I really did not like was the fact that your pet only received "a minimum" of two potty breaks.  And the fact that your dog is not walked in an outdoor setting but rather escorted to a room with faux pebble floors for their potty break.  My concern is that my dog is very well trained not to go indoors at all.  I'm afraid he might feel very uncomfortable for the first day of so until he gets used to the PetsHotel arrangement.

All in all, the PetsHotel is a safe, clean, convenient and affordable boarding option for both dogs and cats.  I would certainly trust these professionals watching my pets while I'm gone.  But if you and your pet require fresh air walks and outdoor activity, it might not be the best situation for you.
