What makes a good agility instructor?

When I started my agility training, I really had almost no idea what to look for in a trainer. The only thing I knew I wanted at that time was someone who was into positive reinforcement. I couldnt have told you when I set out to find a trainer what made a good trainer and what didnt.
My first experience was with a local school that required me to sign up for their Intermediate Obedience class before they would allow me into their agility classes. They wanted to meet us and see what we could...
Bad Dog Owner!

Last week, I did something that made me feel like the worst dog owner ever. Ok, well, maybe not the worst, but you know what I mean
On Friday night, my best friend and I took the ponies for a trail ride off the farm. I frequently take Herbie trail riding with me and shes great around the horses. She doesnt chase them and she doesnt stray far. If we ride on the farm or somewhere off-leash friendly, Herbie comes along. Unfortunately, this particular ride meant lots of road crossings and, while...

Frankie is my Issue Dog. He lived a hard knock life on the streets (or something to that effect) until he was 5 months old and came to me a completely shell-shocked little dude. Three and a half years later, strange people are still scary. Most other dogs are still awful. The world is just a scary place for a dog who never learned how to cope with society early in life. Thankfully, Frankie and I have found a nice system of management for his intense behavior setbacks and he adores me. I am...
Raising Bean: Five months. Building the baby flyball dog.

Growing up herdy.
Time is flying and Puppy Bean is turning into, well, a dog. He turned five months old on Thursday. He has all his big boy teeth. Hes in the process of swapping out his puppy fuzz for an adult coat.
Some people like to raise their puppies without a lot of training. Some people start working heavily with their puppies from the day they come home. I was very enthusiastic with my first Border Collie Steves training, but havent been nearly so hardcore with Bean. Its not that we...
Product Review: Jolly Tug Alien
from Team Unruly

Some of the Team Unruly dogs favorite toys are made by the Jolly Pets corporation; its a favorite of some of our readers as well, as evinced by one of the winning photos in our tug contest. The company began primarily as a maker of equine products (including some pretty fabulous horse toys), and they even make some cool-looking toys for zoo animals; theyve since branched out into making dog toys, and the texture and chomp-ability of the toys really seems to resonate with our dogs. Recently,...
Not Good Enough

What if this puppy grew up in rescue instead of with a family?
Someday I would like to adopt a second dog. I dont want to buy one, not even from a good breeder (thats just not my style; I approve wholeheartedly of good breeders!). I certainly dont want to turn to some backyard breeder of untested mutts or, even worse, a pet store that sells puppy mill puppies of the latest designer breed mix. I want a young adult dog from a rescue or a shelter.
To that end I spend a lot of time perusing...

dark, slim-nosed, with unexpectedly dainty feet and the resigned and solemn air of an existentialist. -Susan Orlean, describing Rin Tin Tin (I)
