  • Book review and giveaway: Forever Paws by Christine Davis

I first came across Christine Davis books when a friend gave me a copy of For Every Cat an Angel after Virginia, my first office cat at the animal hospital I ran for eight years, passed away. That was ten years ago. To this day, the little book lieson an end table in my living room, a lovely reminder of a cat who took a little piece of my heart when she left, the way they all do. I have since given a copy of this little book, and of For Every Dog an Angel, to friends who lost beloved pets....

  • Allegra, Ruby and the birdfeeder

    from The Conscious Cat

on Thursday December 1st, 2011 at 02:00 PM

The last time my dad was here for a visittwelve years ago, he built a birdfeeder for me. I put it on my deck, right in front of the sliding glass doors, every November through March, and all of my cats have enjoyed the kitty tv it provides. Last year was Allegras first year with the birdfeeder, and this year, its Rubys. Theyve both been having a great time watching the birds, and occasional squirrel.

Squirrel visits to the deck have become rare since I use the Hot Meats birdseed, which is...

Why do we love cats? Because theyre beautiful, smart, curious, playful and independent. These are just some of the reasons I thought of right off the top of my head.

Sandy Robins has taken answering the question a step further in her new book, For the Love of Cats: An A-Z Primer for Cat Lovers of All Ages, by offering up 26 reasons. Her alphabet covers interesting facts, anecdotes and clever verses, enhanced by Mark Andersons charming illustrations.

  • More toxic than poinsettias: top 5 holiday cat hazards

    from The Conscious Cat

on Monday November 28th, 2011 at 02:00 PM

Poinsettias fill homes with color during the holiday and we all hear how theyre life-threatening to pets. In fact, theyre not very toxic. They do contain a milky sap that can irritate the mouth but if signs develop they are usually mild.

There are far more dangerous pet hazards during the holidays, and the emergency veterinarians at VRCC Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Hospital say these are 5 to watch out for this year:

Decorations: Tinsel, glass ornaments, spray on snow/flocking, foil,...
  • Ruby’s Reflections

    from The Conscious Cat

on Sunday November 27th, 2011 at 02:00 PM

We had a lot of excitement here on Thursday! It all started with dinner. In addition to our usual food, there was something different in our dishes, and it was yummilicious!

Mom said it was cut up turkey. Mom doesnt eat meat, something no self-respecting cat understands, but I love her anyway. But apparently, she went to have dinner with friends who did eat meat that day, and one of them was kind enough to send a small piece home with Mom to give to us. We love Moms friends!

    After dinner,...

  • Mews and Nips from around the internet

    from The Conscious Cat

on Saturday November 26th, 2011 at 02:00 PM

Its been a rough couple of weeks for working cats. Last week, we reported that Larry the Downing Street cat fell asleep on the job. This week, the top working cat story comes from New York City. Matilda, the resident cat at the famed Algonquin Hotel, has been sent into exile by the citys Department of Health and Mental Hgyiene. The department has banished the cat from the hotels lobby lounge, where she could often be found mingling with guests as they enjoyed one of the hotels signature...
