I watched the TV show "Greatest American Dog" with interest, but I think I can do them one better. In Scottsdale, Ariz., a German Shepherd actually saved his owner's life  by dialing 911.

It wasn't the first time that Buddy, just 18 months old, has rushed in to help his owner, Joe Stalnaker, who suffers from seizures as a result of a head injury he suffered 10 years ago in the U.S. military.

He's done it several times before. Buddy is trained to push a pre-programmed button on his owner's phone when he senses trouble. On his most recent call, he can be heard whimpering and barking when a 911 dispatcher asks if help is needed.

Scottsdale police are routinely dispatched 911 calls. Stalnaker's address was already flagged in the system, with police notified that a dog has been trained to use 911 in cases of emergencies.

Stalnaker spent two days in the hospital but is recovering.

You want a great American dog? I nominate Buddy.
