I don't know if you saw the story about the woman who recently adopted 27 dogs from a shelter to prevent them from being euthanized. When I first read it, I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry.

I'm sure Colleen Spalioni's heart was in the right place. She lost her own dog in November when it was struck and killed by a car, and she wanted to find another that looked just like him. Her Internet search led her to Dogsindanger.com, a site that posts photos of dogs in shelters with the number of days they have left until they are euthanized.

Spalioni, who lives near Reno, hired a teenage neighbor to drive with her almost 800 miles to a shelter near Bakersfield, Calif., where she found a dog that resembled her own. But after seeing so many dogs in need of homes, she just couldn't help herself.

She adopted the dog she wanted - and 26 others, including one Chihuahua, 10 Chihuahua mixes, two German Shepherd mixes, two Miniature Pinschers, a Jack Russell Terrier and a Poodle. She loaded them into her truck and drove home.

Everything would have been fine, except that her new dogs did what dogs normally do. They barked -- so much, in fact, that the neighbors began complaining. And then she was told that a local ordinance allows no more than three dogs per household.

Since then, Spalioni has been looking for new homes for the dogs. So far, she's found places for almost all of them.

And, she said, "I learned my lesson. I promise I won't do this again."

Her concern for the dogs is admirable. I commend her. I'm sure others would love to do the same if they had the space and time to love and care for dogs in need.

But as someone who owns four dogs, I could have told her: It's a lot of work.

This poor woman really overreacted to the loss of her dog! I think it's great that she started the site, though. My question: What shelter would let her adopt multiple dogs like that at once, or would allow her to adopt, say, her 10th dog after she had been to other shelters? Wouldn't someone have checked out how many pets she owned?

My question is why did the shelter let her adopt so many dogs? Those kinds of ordinances are very common where you can only have 3-4 animals in one residence. Good to hear she's found them homes!

She got the dogs from ONE shelter!!??? What was that place thinking? That's just insane. Most cities and counties limit the number of dogs and cats you can legally own on your property. It's like this shelter was encouraging Colleen Spalioni to become an animal hoarder. I'm glad she found homes for them all, but wow!

she said she was with the reno spca and reno humane society and she did arrange with both facilities to pick up these dogs. they (shelter) said she brought extra kennels if she was only picking up one dog why so many kennels? its common for a rescue group to pick up 10 to 20 dogs per visit. they released 20 to her under the spca and humane society. the other 7 were trying to get dropped off at the time, and she wanted to take them. for the dog with the collar stuck in his neck i think that was a dog that might have been picked up on the way or she had. and the surgery cost $450. during xmas and using the kids money.. i wonder how much she got donated to her! i think allot of shelters get a bad rap from people like her. i rescued 2 dogs from a shelter yes there was a cost at the vet for regular maintence but i wanted to help not make me a hero. these animal control officers are doing a job that allot of people wouldnt want to do. its not there fault with the strays around towns or cities. its the publics and they are cleaning up the mess but trying to give these animals a second chance. the kill rate is under 10%(dogs that are sick or hit by cars) for this shelter and with this stunt she pulled hope it doesnt go up:( if it does give thanks to this lady..please spay and neuter your animal...

hello i'm colleen i just wanted to let you know i found home's for all of the dogs i got it took my 12 hrs to find homes for 20 dogs, as of the dog that i got from the SHELTER with the collar stuck in to her neck YES she came from this SHELTER the lady animal control officer was very nice and all i wanted to do was help, as far as the $ 450.00 for the dog with the collar she's doing ok she needs alot of work but she loves her new home the man that has her also took one of the big dogs. i'm not out just $450.00 for her i'm out $ 3,986.38 but i just look at it as i was able to help save there lives. and yes the animal control officer were looking out for the dogs, its just so sad to have to see all the dogs and cat that have to be put down YES its sad but if the public would spay and neuter there pets then the rate of having to put dog or cat down would be down.
