Rachel Ray may know all about cooking for people, but she sure doesn't know dogs.

Modern Dog magazine profiled the Food Network diva in an online story spotlighting her new Rachel Ray "Nutrish" line of dog foods and included a recipe for "Isaboo's Butternut Squash Mac and Cheddar."

One small problem: The recipe calls for onion, of all things.

Hey, onions are toxic to dogs. They can kill your pet. Clearly, the magazine's editors didn't bother to check the ingredients before it was published. The original recipe has since been pulled from the site, with an editor's note pointing out that onions are NOT good for dogs.

It also includes this passage about onions:  "... the amount included in the recipe is small when considered over the whole of the recipe. Furthermore, the recipe was inspired by Rachel's dog, Isaboo, but is intended for people to eat. Always check with your vet which foods are appropriate to share with your dog."

Better yet, simply omit onions from any recipe you create for your dogs. Better to be safe than sorry.

Credit for discovering the recipe (including onions) goes to Seattle Post-Intelligencer blogger Rebekah Denn, who writes "Devouring SEATtle."

Well, some people can just get really careless and don't bother check what they're getting themselves into. We put so much care to our pets that the last thing we want to happen to them is get poisoned from the food that we serve them. Christmas is here and lots of different recipes will be served on the table. And our dogs and cats can just dig in to anything, without knowing what these can bring them. So extra care is needed...Speaking of Christmas, I found this cool site today, http://www.petcentric.com/crittercarols/?DCMP=RAC-PETC-DogTm-Carol08&HQS=Blog. It allows you to create animated e-cards featuring a chorus of singing and dancing pets that bark or meow your favorite holiday songs. What's more fun is that you can even use your friends' or your own pet's photos. I sent one to my friends, and boy, it was a sure hit!

How about not creating "recipes" for dogs (with human food ingredients)? Rachel Ray's dog "creations" sound like they are are designed to sell magazines rather than provide your animal with a healthy meal.

I agree with the poster who says enough with the doggie recipes. I know a family that nearly killed their mini poodle by constantly feeding it the same thing they ate, along with table scraps. The poor dog ended up with diabetes, kidney disease and other illnesses because of a poor diet based on what we eat, not on what dogs SHOULD eat. Now the poodle is on medication the rest of its life. But at least it is eating healthier dog food now. Dogs and cats have unique nutritional needs and responsible owners should know how to feed their pet. As much as my dogs want food from the table I have to think of their health and refuse.

I sent an e-mail to Rachel's website about a year ago with my concerns about her dog food ingredients, including onions. I have a very close friend who lost her dog because he ate onions that were in a dish she fed him. It was a horrible death and the Vet could do nothing. I quit watching Rachel altogether because she continued to add these ingredients to her dog food recipes. This is clearly irresponsible.

Why does every celebrity think it's cool to manufacture pet food? Paul Newman's company (the first and the greatest, since part of the proceeds go to charity) actually makes quality dog and cat food but I'm wary of all these celebs that jump on the money making bandwagon. I hope pet owners read the ingredient labels before buying anything Rachel Ray is selling. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!
