In the midst of a discussion about the economy, global uncertainty and homeland security, President-elect Barack Obama revealed something important about the type of dog that will soon be living within the walls of the White House.

It's either going to be a Labradoodle or a Portuguese Water Dog.

Speaking with George Stephanopoulos on ABC's "This Week," Obama said the choices had been narrowed to those two breeds, although the Labradoodle is really a hybrid (Labrador Retriever and Poodle) and is not recognized by the American Kennel Club. But the question came at the prompting of daughters Malia and Sasha, who accompanied their dad to the televised interview.

Here's how the exchange went:

STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, I got to tell you, you know, (Malia and Sasha are) out touring the museum right now, I heard they were taken straight to the first dog exhibit and while you were getting made up, they went into the control room and played director and producer. And they actually gave me a question they want me to ask you. You know exactly what it's going to be.

OBAMA: Uh-oh. Go ahead.

STEPHANOPOULOS: What kind of a dog are we getting and when are we getting it?

OBAMA: The -- they seem to have narrowed it down to a Labradoodle or a Portuguese water hound.

STEPHANOPOULOS: A medium sized.

OBAMA: Medium sized dog, and so, we're now going to start looking at shelters to see when one of those dogs might come up.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So, you're closing in on it?

OBAMA: We're closing in on it. This has been tougher than finding a commerce secretary.

I'm glad Obama still wants to look to a shelter first. How about a rescue group for both types/breeds? Both of these dogs will require lots of exercise.

Portugese Water Spaniel. It is not a designer dog and if getting a Labradoodle may as well get a Wheaten which looks like one and is less hyper.I am sure teh rescue Groups have one for the Portuguese. I know they have many many for Wheatens that are homeless. For pete's sake.

Hope he looks for a Portugese Water Dog, contact a rescue group, pleeeeeese. Getting a Labradoodle just encourages people to breed more mixed breed dogs, the humane societies, rescue and animal control facilities are full of mixed breeds already. Also a shelter, rescue group usually can match a pet to the family. Labradoodles do shed! No gaurantee they will take after a poodle and not shed. If the family keeps the dog away from their face, shouldn't have to much problem with allergy.

My vote is for a portuguese water dog. As it was so well stated in other comments, a labradoodle is a mixed breed designer dog. And, as a vet clinic employee, I have met labradoodles that shed!

ALL pure bred dogs were "designer dogs" at one time and each Labradoodle, just like each PWD, has a distinct personality. There are mellow Labradoodles and mellow PWDs. Either of these two choices are wonderful picks. (But I vote for the Labradoodle) ;-)

Please no irresponsibly bred mutts.... and NO, pure breds were NEVER "designer dogs." The whole term "designer" is from greeder breeders who want money!!! Responsible breeders would never introduce new "breeds" when literally millions of dogs are dying because of the over population!!!

THey need to get a porty.. I have a 10 year old porty named Misty... shes the best and most beautiful dog in the world... I haven't seen a single hair shed from her in this entire time.. and despite what people are saying... they don't need to be in the water or realy active... my dog actually doesn't even like the water that much.. and we live in Northern Ontario Canada... so she doesn't get walked that much.. and she has no problem with that... when I went home for xmas break since Id been watching the dog whisperer.. i tought her how to walk on a treadmill.. not so much as tought... but put her on it.. and she started walking... no problems whatsoever... so obviously... very smart.... misty is the most peaceful dog in the world and she loves anyone..... not really loves... but it seems like shes half cat half dog... she doesn't really give much of a **** about anyone... in other words... she wont bug you ever.... shes the most 'chill' dog in the world... When I saw Obama give his acceptance speech and talk about geting a dog... the first thing that came to mind was.... "FoO! You need to get a porty!'. and he will... and he should...

I have two labradoodles and we have met more than our share of PWD's. They are both great dogs, but doodles have more personality. PWD's always seem serious. Doodles are goofy, like living muppets. My doodles LOVE children. Before you start calling labradoodles designer dogs, please learn more about their history, and the STFU. I have an F1 (3.5 YO girl) and an F1B (1.3 YO boy), and they are both different, but complement each other very well. Regardless, with both dog types, the Obamas need to understand that both of these dog types need jobs that exert energy. We live on Lake Champlain and my dogs jobs are to clean the lake of all floating sticks, when its not frozen. It may be difficult to find either of these dogs in a shelter and not have behavorial issues... they are so influential at a young age, and they haven't figured out their jobs yet! I can't see how either would have a chance in the white house. Although I have read that doodles can make great pets for the elderly. I haven't met a dood that would apply too. I think this would be worse for the PWD, as they HAVE TO WORK!

Portuguese Water Dog is the kind of dog the Obama's deserve. They are intelligent, kind, loving, loyal, hard-working and beautiful.
