If you live in California, you know all about the state's massive budget problems. State workers' salaries are being cut, social services are being pared back and various programs are feeling the pinch of a $24.3-billion deficit.

But now it looks like animal shelters - and the animals who are kept there in hopes of finding new owners - will also feel the brunt of California's fiscal woes.

Among the cuts proposed last week by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is one that would end a state mandate to hold animal shelter strays for six days. Kiska Icard, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco SPCA, told the San Francisco Chronicle that the change - which is expected to save the state $24.6 million - would result in euthanizing more animals.

"Obviously, monies need to come from somewhere," she said, "but to do it on the backs of these animals is just really sad."

I've heard that shelters may euthanize animals after just three days. If that happens, it would be a major tragedy for thousands of dogs, cats and other lost or abandoned pets.

If you live in California and are thinking about adopting an animal from a shelter, now is the time. You could literally save the life of a cat or dog.

This news is sending me to our local shelter. There are more animals than ever at the shelters in my state because of the recession and the loss of family homes. Shelters already are in crisis in California. Now this? Whatever it takes, I will find a place for another shelter animal in my home.

Will this affect no-kill shelters? Do they even exist anymore? So sad.

We have 3 dogs, but my wife is looking online to see if we can rescue another. We might have to. I encourage others to adopt.

This is a tragedy and just further testament of Schwarzenegger's inability to properly allocate funds for our state. How can we have one of the world's biggest economies and be so deep in debt? It's sad to think that puppy mills can thrive so easily, raising dogs in such poor conditions and still somehow sell them at incredibly high prices, when so many animals that need a home are being put down each day at shelters.

Californians might consider adopting more if cities could up the legal limit of dogs within the city from 2 to 6 dogs.

If the guv would crack down on hands-on cell phone drivers at $250/pop, for starters, there would be plenty of cash to keep the shelters alive. The critters are the most deserving of an exemption.

People dumping animals at shelters should be made to pay the and the hold period for food and care for six days as well as the euthanasia fee. This shouldn't even be a taxpayer expense. When they go out to buy the pets from pet stores, they should be held accountable for what happens when they don't want it any more.

Mr Schwarzenegger proposed this exact same action on the local news years ago, soon after entering into office, within 15 minutes of his announcement and his office being flooded with calls, he changed his mind and made his second announcement that he would not do this. Unfortunately, there is so much recklessness and unnecessary spending, if this government has it's way, innocent lives will be lost. The thought sickens me that the poorest, oldest and ill fated people and innocent animals are where the cuts are purposed to begin. Shame on these "leaders"!!!

Sad to hear this. Our dear pets seem not to have a voice in our democratic country. When I am ready for another dog I will head for an adoption agency Thank you for the wonderful work you are doing for our beloved pets..

Yes there are no kill shelters and rescue groups that are fighting what seems to be a losing battle. The number of animals being turned in are at such a high level that all of these groups are being inundated. Animal lovers need to contact the Governor's office to let him know that he is not taking advantage of the many ways already in place for raising money and he needs to look to them before cutting the school, insurance resources, public safety, Animal Control and other areas that are so vitally needed. I firmly believe that he is taking retaliatory actions to punish the voters that dismissed the agendas he put on the ballot in the last election. There are other means of balancing the budget if the special interest groups and big business were told NO. Millions would be saved right there. Call, e-mail, telephone the Govenor to let him know of your displeasure of the way he is handling the state budget. My only satisfaction is that I didn't vote for the idiot either time. Those that did short sheeted their own beds so let them sleep in them.
