For the first time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug made specifically to treat cancer in dogs. The drug, which is made by Pfizer Animal Health, an arm of the giant pharmaceutical company, is called Palladia and is used to treat canine cutaneous mast cell tumors, which account for about one in five cases of skin tumors in dogs.

Although some mast cell tumors can be easily removed through surgery, other cases have been more difficult to treat, and the cancer can spread to other parts of a dog's body. Palladia kills tumor cells and cuts off the tumors' blood supply.

"Prior to this approval, veterinarians had to rely on human oncology drugs, without knowledge of how safe or effective they would be for dogs," Bernadette Dunham, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, said in a statement. "Today's approval offers dog owners, in consultation with their veterinarian, an option for treatment of their dog's cancer."

In clinical studies, Palladia caused about 60 percent of tumors in dogs to disappear, shrink or stop growing.

Like all drugs, there are side effects, which may include diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss and bloody stools.

I heard this yesterday on the news. Although my dogs are healthy, it's good to know that these companies are looking for ways to cure some of their serious illnesses. Thanks for this.

Pet owners everywhere are applauding this news. I think it's wonderful that the FDA approved this drug. If you've ever had a animal with cancer and have gone through the various treatments, it's very difficult. Hopefully this will help ease suffering.

This is really great news. A lot of big dogs, when they reach a certain age, tend to get tumors. It sounds like it's very effective, too.

My Dog just passed from Cancer. It was the most heartbreaking experience. I'm glad the FDA is taking steps to help dogs and their owner suffer from cancer. This is good news. Here is the fund I set up to help find cures for canine cancer. Please take a look and donate if you can: http://www.wearethecure.org/friends/champrip51609

I hope cancer research for dogs continues. Maybe they can learn something from this kind of research that will help people.

I'm so excited to hear and read about this news. As a mommy of a four legged baby with cancer this is something I've long awaited. I wish it would be out before 2010. Thank you to those who made this drug possible. :)

my jack russell terrior has already had her right eye removed because of a mass cell tumor. it has been 11 months and she has been just fine until about 2 weeks ago a huge knot just appeared on the right side of her neck. we took her to the University of Tennessee Vet school and they have the drug available on July 6th. It is not on the market yet but they can get it starting the 6th. I will try anything to save my little baby girl. They talk like it is a fast actin drug that you will know if it is working in the first 2 weeks. My Abbydoodle is only 6 yrs old. My husband has been out of work and we can barely make it and they cannot tell me the price of this drug, only that it will be between 100.00 and 400.00 a month. You have to take this drug for life. I don't know how I will manage, but I will have to get 2 jobs and hopefully after my husbands 10th surgery, he will be able to go back to work. I pray everynight for a miracle and maybe this drug is it. I will let everyone knows the results that I get. Everyone please say a prayer for my sweet dog. thanks. T
