The practice of tethering or chaining dogs is never a good one. If you don't have a fenced yard or a way to contain your pet in an area that allows him to exercise, maybe you shouldn't own a pet.

I'm all for pet adoption, but people should remember that dogs need ample room outside in their homes. A small dog needs less room, but there should be enough space to run and stretch and do his business. City dogs need to be taken out regularly.

Never chain or tether a dog. It's just not safe.

I wrote about this issue earlier this year, but it continues to remain in the forefront in many communities. Over the weekend in Huntington, W.Va., a group of citizens chained themselves to posts and trees at a local park to support a local ordinance that would make it illegal to tether dogs during inclement weather.

Chaining a dog under any conditions is unacceptable. Let's hope these folks got their point across - and that they push for a more stringent law after this one passes.

I must say that chaining a dog for a long period of time is just a dog owner being lazy. When my father died, he had a terrier/daschund mix female that i immediately took home because my mom couldn't stand the fur all over the house. Anyway, i too chained Angel outside for hours at a time because i didn't want the hair all over the house. One day i was looking out the window and she was just sitting there and to me looked so sad! it was at that time i thought "how selfish i am!!" Angel is a loving house-trained family member and she has never spent another minute on that chain!! Any fur situation is easily fixed by brushing her and vacuuming the house!! She has also taught me to spend more time outside with her on walks and to just run around and have fun! I received a toy fox terrier in March of this year and the two of them are terrific together!! its great to know that i can allow them to go ouside without me because Angel is so well behaved that when i call her to come in, Papi, (my tft) will just follow her in. So, please take you dog off the chain, spend some time with them outside everyday and you and your dog will be much happier and healthier!!!

Kennels that are so small are another problem. Our next door neighbor has two dogs in a small kennel and the dogs never get walked or played with. Why have dogs. There is no law against it but should be. They also have 8 terriers that are in the house and hardly ever see the outdoors. Of course they don't walk them either. I would like to put our neighbors in that same kennel for a week and see how they would like it.

These are two great comments. I often wonder the same thing -- why add a dog to your home if it's not going to be included in the family. We have 3 Dachshunds and they're in the house most of the day except when we take them for long walks. We have a nicely fence yard, so when they want to lie in the sun or do their business, they can go outside. Chaining a dog to a fence, a tree or a kennel makes a dog feel left out. If you can't make a dog a part of your family, don't get one.

i have to disagree...i beleive chaining your dog for short periods of time is fine...if you chain him for 2 hours then later that day run]play\walk ect.him..what's wrong with that...i don't beleive in chaining your dog day in and day out...but for short periods of time..come on people..i to beleive your pet should be part of the family...i live in a place were you can only tie out your dog...yes damons' tied out at times, but he spends lots of free time with his family..every were we go and he can go too he's brought...and he gets at least one,1 hour walk....he sleeps on his own quilt,in the house every night...i don't think he ever feels left out..so like i said come on people, wake up and get out of your fantasy world!!
