To those of us who count our dogs and cats as members of the family, hearing the results of a recent poll was no surprise. My wife and I nodded when we saw the story. In many ways, our lives are centered on our three Dachshunds and cat.

I'm sure some will disagree, and that's fine. Anyway, it was interesting to read that an Associated Press-Petside.com poll this week found that half of all American pet owners consider their pets as much a part of the family as anyone in the household. Another 36 percent said their pet, while not a full member, is still a part of the family.

That's 86 percent who feel their pet is at least a part of the family. Personally, I can see why.

We worry when they're sick, we get anxious when they don't eat all their food, we buy them toys to play with and we appreciate their companionship. That's love.

The poll also found that single people were more likely to say a pet was a full member of the family than married people (66 percent of single women vs. 46 percent of married women). Also, men were less likely to call their pet a full member of the family. Another 42 percent said they take their pets on vacation.

The fact is, we love our pets. And they love us back. Isn't that what we expect from family?

We have -2- cocker spaniels. One 13yrs. old, one 7mos. old. We lost our 1st one, 16yrs. old last May to cancer and demetia. I thought my life had ended. I have had her since she was born because I had her mother and father, so we had that bond since then. She was my life. She was there when no one else was, when I was sad or just to greet me from work, it mad my day. We buried her in one of my flower beds and I think of her daily. The 13yr. old, at the moment, has a slipped disk in her neck but we are hoping it will go back in on it's own. The 7mo. old, I cannot seem to get "potty trained"!! So, yes, they are members of our family, they are my children! Thanks, Judy, mom to Buggie Boo, Abbie and my dear Honey.

My husband and I both consider our little Rat-Cha, Rocky, to be a full family member. He is such good company for me while hubby is at work. We leave July 11 for the mountains of WV and yes, Rocky goes with us. We found some lovely cabins that accept dogs, right in the middle of those beautiful hill. We can't wait to take Rocky walking on the trails and swimming in the lake. Our children are grown and gone but Rocky is our baby. Thanks, Robin, Rocky's Mommy

I have always had pets...all kinds. Cats, dogs, lizards, hamsters, fish and more. Yes they are members of the family. I would do just about anything for any of them. Our vet was shocked when I twice brought my son's hamster Marshmallow in for wet tail. This requires antibiotics and pepto-bismol to hopwfully clear up. The mortality rate is so high that when I called back to ask what normal fluid intake should be the vet exclaimed, "It;s still alive!?" I could have bought 30 new hamsters, but none of them would have been Marshmallow. HOWEVER, they are NOT equal to my children or my spouse. It is, excuse the pun, a pet peave of mine when people say "They are my children." And my experience has been that only people who have no children or who are suffering from empty nest syndrome would make the comparison. It's real cute to call them "children" , but they are not the same. Even though I dare say some people treat their animals better than their actual kids and spouse. Not just my opinion. I've had pet owners say they'd rescue animals before people in a crisis. God help me I hope I never need them in such a situation.

When is a pet (read dog) anything else? They are unwavering in their loyalty and at your side when times are hard. They grow with your children and age with you as adults. They suprise you and delight you. Life is fun when you are with them. Sounds like a great family member to me. The only downside is that the king size bed isn't big enough (labradoodle and golden retriever).

Our dogs and cat have always been considered members of our family. When we lost our Golden, it was as if we'd lost a child. It still hurts.

I don't have kids so my dogs are like my kids. When my Harley, my Maltese, died in March I was totally devastated as he'd been with me and there for me through some really hard times. I just am so thankful that I still had Indy and Stuart, my Bichons, with me to get me through that time. They make me smile every day and give me unconditional love. Don't know what I'd do without them. So yeah, they're most definitely my family; they know when I'm sad, they know when I'm glad, they're always happy to see me. Mary

of course our pets are family!! Sometimes, they treat us better than the human family members. they don't lie, they don't ask for loans and no matter what, they are happy to see you. when im feeling a little sad, it never fails that my dogs know it and automatically lay down next to me or sit at my feet and just be there. it always works and i feel better. it is really something how they seem to want to make your happy! and in return, i want them to be happy too.
