Socializing your dog is probably the most important thing you can do as a pet owner. Taking him on walks to meet people and other dogs prevents the kind of situation that a Pomeranian named Gizmo is now facing in Aspen, Colo.

A judge has threatened to order Gizmo to be euthanized if the 13-year-old dog bites anyone else. The dog was kept in an animal shelter for 10 days after biting a woman in August - clearly not the first time he's bitten someone.

"As a judge, the hardest decision I ever have to make is to take someone's pet away or euthanize it," Judge Brooke Peterson told Gizmo's owner, Melinda Goldrich, last week. "But you and I have been dealing with your dog since 2006 ... and your excuses have worn out my patience."

Peterson told Goldrich that it's curtains for Gizmo (not the dog pictured above) if he's seen in Aspen again. A friend in a nearby town has offered to care for the dog.

I blame the owner, first for not socializing her pet as a puppy, second for not making sure it could not bite anyone else after it became obvious the dog was vicious. It's every pet owner's responsibility.

Yes, even small dogs can be vicious.

A very sad story, but this dog's owner knew Gizmo was a biter, and should have muzzled the dog in every social situation. Having said that, it's not always the owner's fault. Sometimes the dog is just mean and needs to be put down. As a high school student, I brought a friend back to her home where there was a German Shepherd who knew me and who I also knew. He had been a police dog that was too mean for even the police to keep. I knew to stand still until he smelled me, which I did. I was not afraid. For some reason, he didn't like me that day and mauled me in front of his owners, who were too shocked to move at first. There was no reason for that dog to bite me, nor was there a reason for him to bite his owner as he napped on the couch months later. He was put down after biting his owner. As for me, I was afraid of big dogs after that, until I decided to "take the bull by the horns," and bought a German Shepherd, my favorite breed since I was a child watching Rin Tin Tin and Bullet (Roy Rogers' German Shepherd). As a puppy, my dog sensed my fear and growled at me a lot. I hired a dog trainer to train my dog and to train ME to train my dog. My dog and I bonded, I socialized her every chance I got, and there was no more growling at me. Much later in life, she became overprotective of "her territory" and bit the postman. Not good. Then I saw her nearly bite my next-door neighbor's boy, so I took her to a vet and had her "de-armed" (that's where the canine teeth, which puncture the skin and do the damage in a biting incident, are filed down to be even with the other teeth). It didn't hurt her at all and I never had to worry about her biting anyone again. Had I not de-armed her, I would have bought a muzzle, but that's not 100% coverage -- it only works when you remember to put it on. De-arming her was safe, humane, and the responsible thing to do, I think. I'd be glad to hear if anyone disagrees, and why.

No dog should be put down because it is "mean". Do mean people get euthanized? No. Michael Vick is a blood thirsty psycho / animal abuser & murderer, & he just got a slap on the wrist. An undeniably light slap on the wrist at that. He should be behind bars as we speak.

It is my belief that ultimately the owner is responsible for their dog's aggression

I agree -- the owner is culpable here for not taking action when the Pom first exhibited aggressive behavior. I know most people hate muzzles but this animal needs one. Or needed one, before the judge in Aspen pronounced his sentence. Sad, sad, sad...
