Tackle Vick, feed a hungry dog

I'm going to admit it right now: The first time I saw Michael Vick play a football game after getting out of prison, I wanted someone to tackle him. Hard. I wanted him to hurt, just a little.

I felt somewhat guilty about it, but now I realize I wasn't the only one who felt this way.

In an ad that appeared in the Washington Post this week, Main Line Animal Rescue in Chester Springs, Pa., northwest of Philadelphia, is pledging to donate five bags of dog food to a Washington D.C. animal shelter every time Vick is tackled in the Oct. 26 game between Vick's Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins.

Five sacks for one quarterback sack - or one tackle.

The ad includes this line: "Because there are no second chances on an empty stomach."

Vick's supporters, of course, insist the disgraced quarterback should get a second chance at earning millions of dollars playing football after he spent 18 months in prison for his role in financially backing a dogfighting operation. Vick was reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and is eligible to play in the Eagles' third regular-season game.

"I think we're all getting tired of the ‘Does he deserve a second chance?' kind of thing," Bill Smith, founder and CEO of the rescue group, said. "Maybe it's about time that the million pit bulls euthanized every year got their second chance."

So now I have a good reason to root for Vick to get tackled -- because it will help feed dogs in need.

Just like your "average Joe" felon, who has a darn hard time getting a job, home, or a life back; who has to report to a parole officer, or wear an ankle cuff; they too probably find it hard to stomach Michael Vick's return to "stardom". And for us pet lovers it's doubly hard to take. I'm sickened by it. Thank you thank you to these folks who are doing something that benefits all of us in the animal loving community.

I think this is great. People should continue to speak out for those poor dogs who lost their lives so terribly. I do not think Vick deserves a second chance at fame and money. The fact that he wasn't put to death, is second chance enough.

I believe he deserves a second chance but I don't think for a moment he's sorry, except for the fact he was caught. He should have to have to be a spokes person for dogs and animals, as anyone who abuses animals.
