I'm a sucker for dog stories with happy endings. Here's one about a family of four dogs that appears to have been rescued by a Chicago-area family after their owners were killed in a motorcycle crash on Labor Day weekend.

The dogs belonged to Mike and Susan Kelms, who died last month but whose wishes were that the dogs be kept together if anything happened to them. Now it appears a family is willing to take them in, said Kathy Deets of the Chicago Canine Club in Burr Ridge, located southwest of Chicago.

Many villages in the area have a limit of three dogs per house, but Deets' club has worked hard to make sure the Kelms' dogs stay together. There's another problem: Their new adoptive family has owned dogs in the past but never more than one at a time.

"The family has not made a decision yet," Deets told the Web site Chicagobreakingnews.com in an email last week, "but things are going well."

Here's hoping the family chooses to keep the dogs. My wife and I have three Dachshunds and are about a welcome a rescue Greyhound to our family. We're proof it can be done.

I hope these dogs get to stay together. Dogs learn to love one another and can grieve when forced to be apart. I am keeping my fingers crossed & my 3 pups have their paws crossed that everything works out for this family and these dogs. All my dogs are rescue dogs so I am a big fan of rescues. Good luck! I, too, hope these dogs get to stay together. Some dogs are just meant to be buddies. We currently have 9 dogs - two we purchased and seven whom we have taken in because some irresponsible pet owner dumped them out in the countryside where we live. Over the five years, we have housed over 16 dogs, ran some off, had to have a few put down, found homes for some. What do the people think who throw these dogs away? Okay, so they don't think except for their own comfort. We are not rich people, but God provides - and He provides for the dogs. We have had each dog spayed or neutered, each has their own inside or outside kennel. We get them their annual vet visits, give them heart worm preventative, and try our best to make their every day lives happy and healthy. But we can't take in any more. So what do we do when the next little creature comes onto our property? The shelters are full; we are full. You tell me what to do.

It's a miracle someone is willing to give 4 adult dogs a chance to stay together. I hope it works out for them. We currently have 4 dogs as well
