The picture above was my first encounter with a real snake not the harmless garter snakes in my Western New York lawn. We were on a family Florida trip. Unlike pictures posed with parrots, I felt uneasy for this picture but smiled anyway. In this moment, I learned that I could feel uneasy and safe, as long as I treated this animal with respect. It was 1977.I was 6 years old. I still remember at 42.
That a snake moves like a fish on land is utterly foreign to our human experience. Our inability...

More fun than staring down dead birds in your freezer, and worth 1 minute and 17 seconds of your time, watch these live turkeys comically slip and slide downhill in my side yard. Who needs TV in these parts when you have a window? Be sure to stick around for the surprisingly ambitious stray cat at the end!
Happy Thanksgiving Week!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-HkvIAcOmI

Hurricane “Relief Run” Becomes “Rebuild Run” on Coney Island
from This One Wild Life» This One Wild Life
on Wednesday November 14th, 2012 at 09:36 PM
A fleet of Army Jeeps rolled slowly down a still sleepy 21st Street in Coney Island. They parked in perfect rows at a sandy asphalt tennis court across the street from where I stood. Next came 10 ambulances. Suddenly, the enormity of the situation rang crystal clear. This iswhy we, Hoags Corners Volunteer Fire Company, drove 3 1/2 hours through the dark to deliver hurricane relief supplies by morning.
Imagine being elderly, disabled or simply without another place to go when Hurricane Sandy...

This is one of those topics that gets me right here. Pictured above is Trex. Hes one of our adoptable dogs at Dog House Adoptions, one of roughly 30 who weve offered shelter from the streets in Rensselaer County, NY since our founding 6 months ago.
I know, first hand, how much small, local rescue does...

Today, I woke to a message on a silly YouTubevideo of my cat,Jed, posted back in 2010 called Cat Turns Treat Monster. The note simply said, So many people were brought here by ThisIsHorosho. It was the only recent comment of many in English, other than onethatsays Russian Invasion!
Having seen traffic from known sources like The Huffington Post,CesarsWay, and I Can Has Cheeseburger, I wondered who this Horosho person was.A quick Google/Wiki search (and a poor English to Russian translation)...
