Are Pit Bulls Inherently Dangerous as a Breed?
from The Pet Health Care Gazette

Breed-specific legislation is unfair in any form. Photo credit: srqpix/Flickr.com
All pit bulls are dangerous by nature, at least according to a Maryland Court of Appeals decision.
I have to say that, as far Im concerned, this is one of the most unfair rulings Ive ever read. Please dont get me wrong. I strongly believe that people should be held liable for their dogs behavior. If you own a vicious dog and you allow that dog to attack someone, whether on purpose or by accident, you should be...

Kilo the Hero Pit Bull.
NEW YORK Theres a dog that took a bullet, possibly saving his owners life. And surprisingly, the 12-year-old pit bull shot in the head survived.
The pit bull named Kilo was off to the vet Wednesday for a check-up, after taking a bullet for his owner, Justin Becker.
Hes a hero. He saved my life. He went to protect me and he did his job, Becker told CBS 2?s John Slattery.
Even Dr. Greg Panarello, the veterinarian who treated the dog, was impressed.
Incredibly lucky....
Breed Bans, BSL and Mislabeled Pit Bulls
from The Pet Health Care Gazette
on Friday March 23rd, 2012 at 03:03 PM
Breed bans and breed-specific legislation (BSL) continues to be a hot topic. Opponents of BSL, myself included, argue that it is unfair to determine a dogs future based solely on the way the dog looks.
I have no problem with laws directed at vicious dogs. In fact, I believe the owners of a truly vicious dog should be held accountable for that dogs actions. However, I also believe that this legislation should be based on the behavior of an individual dog (and its owners), not a blanket...
Hiding behind the word "adoptable"

Last week, there was a news story out of Springfield, MO about their successful, 19 week run, at being a "no kill" shelter. While, there are many good points about the story, it did highlight for me maybe one of my biggest pet peeves in animal sheltering that I feel like I'm seeing a lot more of these days.First, a little about Springfield, MO's shelter. The shelter itself is very small and very old -- and was very much designed as a catch and kill facility (like many old shelters were). The...My Guest Blog On Traveling With Your Pittie And BSL @ That Touch Of Pit

Thanks to the folks atThat Touch of Pitblog for featuring me as a guest blogger this week! I got a chance to talk about my experience driving Lucy through Miami-Dade county which has BSL laws. Theres been word that they may be repealing BSL in that area, but plenty of other places in the country have similar laws and my suggestions apply no matter which area you are driving through with your pittie. Hope you find the information helpful! Safe travels with your pittie!

Pit Bulls May Lose ‘Vicious’ Label In Ohio
from Dog Files
on Wednesday February 1st, 2012 at 05:49 PM
COLUMBUS, OHIO A bill that would remove the vicious label from pit bulls is likely headed for the governors desk.
The Ohio Senate approved House Bill 14 by a 27-5 vote on Tuesday, with some changes.
Those modifications will have to be approved by the Ohio House of Representatives before the bill can be signed into law.
PitbBulls reportedly are the only specific breed labeled as vicious in the Ohio Revised Code (ORC 955.11). That will change with the new law.
The law currently defines a vicious...

from Thoughts Fur Paws
on Wednesday February 1st, 2012 at 04:25 AM
Current law defines a vicious dog as one that, without provocation, has seriously injured a person, has killed another dog, or is of the general breed known as pit bull. Among numerous other changes, the bill drops the reference to pit bull from that definition. BUT THE SENATE has PASSED SUB-HB 14 THEYVE LISTENED TO US! Theyve honored constituent wishes and REMOVED PIT BULLS from the VICIOUS DOG LAW!Watch for yourself near the 45-minute mark here (!):

from Pets for Patriots

Breed-specific legislation affecting military pet owners can have serious consequences for dogs targeted by these laws. Dogs wreaking havoc on a neighborhood is a real and serious issue for some communities across the country. In response, lawmakers have enactedBreed Specific Legislation(BSL), more commonly known as breed bans, which effectively outlaw certain types of dogs.
BSLoriginatedin the 1980s, withpit bullsas the primary target. As the result of serious and even occasionally fatal dog...
Baseball Star Mark Buehrle Voices Opposition to BSL
on Saturday January 21st, 2012 at 09:50 PM
Mark Buehrle, the new pitcher for the Miami Marlins, has stepped up to the plate to help Pit Bull-type dogs who are dogged by canine profiling in Miami-Dade County.
A proud pet parent to four Fidos, including an adopted 18-month-old American Staffordshire Terrier names Slater, dog discrimination in Miami-Dade County meant that the baseball star moved his family to nearby Broward County when he became a member of the Marlins. Speaking out about the situation, Buehrles wife stated in her blog:...

It's been a really busy first week of the year (more on that later) and I have a lot of posts that I want to get caught up on. In the meantime, one of my favorite things is reading other people's year-end wrap-ups.So, below, are a few of my favorites so far:Stop BSL has a wrapup of BSL across the country.Last year we had 6 BSL repeals, 34 instances where Breed Specific Laws were rejected, and 12 instances where new BSL was passed. As I've noted before, it is often said that "BSL is spreading...
