It's Saturday. At For Love of a Dog that means it's time for a dog song. Bob The Kelpie Dog is a catchy children's song and illustrated with fantastic video of a Kelpie dog (Bob) herding sheep. Don't miss this one! All four dogs here at For Love of a Dog loved this song due to the whistle signals Bob is receiving from Don. Grab a dog or two. Sit. Stay. Relax and marvel at the herding skill of this amazing Kelpie dog.Just Because

Since I am still struggling with organized thought and coherent sentences, I just thought I would share some pictures I shot the past couple of weeks at Cindy's & Fido's...just because. Obviously I am still having fun with my camera and LOVE my new lens. This is Cindy's dog Kael. I have been learning how to move my focus point around in the frame to select what I want the focus to be on. It is harder than letting the Auto Focus feature find it for you, but makes for some nice shots in the...John & Bonnie

Things have been a changin' round here since John joined me on the bread line. Now that he is an unemployed slacker like me, I can't use the excuse that he is too busy to work a dog. John would like to do herding as a hobby; however, he is not obsessed with it... like me. Since Bonnie is never going to make a serious trial dog & John just wants to have fun - they are a perfect match. When I went to Idaho and left John here with Ranger and Bonnie - they bonded. She has started following...Working, Working, Working

The girls are together again! They have been getting along well. Brynn and Bonnie are joined at my hip. Beth has been keeping to herself and hanging out with Ranger & John. No snarking at each other, thankfully. Ranger's nose has been a little bent out of shape, but he will get over it soon. I think it is because he is no longer the center of attention - and he has to share my lap again. Ranger wants Brynn to go back to Idaho. Get over it Ranger. Things will settle down soon. I made a...Ramblings

I am so proud of Bonnie I am about to burst. I have been working on her outruns. Lots of 'triangle' drills to work on bending her out combined with walk abouts, stops/starts and flanking drills. The wider she is getting and more reliable she is on the sheep (less goosing) the longer distance I am letting her go on her outrun. The lift is improving too. She is still a bit of a speed racer at the top, but I can see her confidence building and begin to calmly lift the sheep. The pace on her...Brynn's Sheep Teaser

Dave Viklund from from Brigands Hideout in Battleground, WA was an instructor at Fido's Farm Sheep Camp last week. On the last day of instruction I asked him to test Brynn on sheep. Brynn is showing signs of being very 'sticky' and eyeing up strongly on the sheep. She gets sucked into the heads of the sheep and sticks there. Dave's goal during this 'test' was to keep her moving. Dave is doing that by tapping the ground lightly with the flag to help 'break' her eye then to prompt her to circle...Kiddo vs Ranger

I love Ranger. I really do. But I feel terrible leaving him alone while we go herding with the other dogs. The poor boy...all alone in the back yard. Lazing about, watching the bugs fly by...chewing on his bone, enjoying the solitude. Wait, that sounds pretty darn good actually. Maybe he doesn't have it so bad? The problem is our city will only allow me to have four dogs. If I am going to have more than that I need a kennel license. Taking in the occasion foster dog that pushes me above four...Does Ranger have BCHADD?

I have a dream that one day Ranger will a sheepdog. Because of this dream refuse to give up on Ranger and put him on sheep at least once a month. It is our dream a spark will suddenly ignite the instinct buried deep...VERY deep within the dark scary recesses of his brain. Perhaps Ranger's instinct is being overwhelmed by a severe case of BCHADD brought on by a traumatic puppy hood? (Falling out of a truck on a freeway then abandoned at the vet could cause permanent emotional scars). What is...Evil Beth and Weaving Ranger

'Evil Beth' made an appearance during our lesson with Karen Child on Tuesday. FINALLY someone else saw what I deal with in the field with her alone. Karen was surprised at the change in Beth from the last time I had a lesson with her (before the Scott Glen clinic). At the clinic Scott told me to back off on correcting Beth, let her build the enthusiasm for the sheep and her work. I have done that, but now she is a MONSTER! Enthusiasm for sheep is not a problem - respecting me is another issue...Genetics, Learning, and the Whole Dog

Christine Hibbard, CTC, CPDTI went to a place called Fidos Farm with my Aussie named Conner: http://fidosfarm.com. We went for an instinct test. I had no idea what to expect since I know absolutely nothing about herding. The instructor did a wonderful job of explaining what she was going to do with Conner and what to [...]
